LOSS OF LIFE IN WEST INDIES. WIDESPREAD DAMAGE REPORTED United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received August 17, 5.5 p.m.) KINGSTON (Jamaica), August 16. Seventy persons were drowned to-day by floods in the city and parishes of St. Thomas, St. Catherine and St. Mary, following a storm. The damage is estimated at 2,000,000 dollars. Bridges and buildings were swept away and banana plantations levelled. The storm lasted six hours, and is described as the worst in eighty years. Water rose as high as 6ft. in the streets and rushed through dwellings, washing away many occupants trapped tn them.
