NEWS AND NOTES

It was the intention of the nowfamous New Zealand athlete, J. E. Lovelock, after competing in the interuniversity athletic contest at Princeton, where he established a new world's record for the mile, to visit Canada and make an attempt to lower the Canadian one-mile record. Advice has been received that Lovelock took part in a night meeting at Hamilton, Ontario, last month, but was unsuccessful in his attack on the record, though making fast time. Unfortunately the track was affected by heavy rain which fell after the meeting commenced, and Lovelock was handicapped by the lack of a good man to set the pace. “It is extraordinary the number Of people with no money who drive motor cars," said Mr W. R. MoKean, S.M., in the Auckland Folioe Court the other day, when counsel for a motorist who had committed a minor traffic offence stated that his client was in poor circumstances, and would find difficulty in paying his fine. Laek of money was also advanced by two motor cyclists as the reason why they had no licence, When both offenders said they obtained licenses immediately after being "caught” by the police the magistrate remarked that it was surprising they could find the neeessary money for the licenses after court proceedings had been instituted, but not before. Several motorists prosecuted for trafflo breaches sought an extended time in which to pay their fines.

objection to the term “cold lakes,” as applied to Lakes Wanaka, Wakatipu, Hawea, Manapouri and Te Anau, was voiced by Mr J. A. B. Walker at the annual meeting o< the Southland League the other day. He said that in the north peopl who read about the "cold lakes" imagined they would see snow-clad mountains and lakes covered with Ice on which they could skate, It was time a better term than "cold” was used. The chairman of the league (Mr W. Hlnchey) said that “southern lakes" was a better term. Mr H. L. Mair said he understood that for the last two years the Tourist Department had spoken cf the lakes as the southern lakes. “The Railways Department still uses the term ‘cold lakes,'" said Mr WalkeT. A motion was passed urging the Government to use in all official communications and publications the word "southern” in place of "cold” as applied to the lakes of Otago and Southland.
