STREET INSPECTION. On Thursday afternoon the members of the Temuka Borough Council, together with the Mayor, made a tour of inspection of the various streets of the borough for the purpose of ascertaining first hand where improvements were needed. The inspection lasted over three hours, a halt being made at certain points and consultations held on matters of improvements which it is intended to carry out chiefly by means of unemployed labour. GENERAL NEWS. On a recent night, a Temuka motorist ran into and killed a horse in the vicinity of Arowhenua. Ham, butter, etc., were among the articles taken from a local resident's safe last week. A young man recently rode a steer from Pareora to Temuka, from where the animal was taken by train to Christchurch. The animal, a most docile one, was steered by means of a halter. It belonged to a family who were moving to the Christchurch district, and because of its usefulness and kindly nature had become ‘one of the family." It is said that its uses at Pareora were such that it was frequently used in a dray to carry out turnips, hay and other feed for cattle. “AIR MAIL.” The latest and most modern giant air liners which have opened up a new era of trans-continental transportation will be seen on the screen when “Air Mail,” Universal’s widely hailed drama of the government mail fleet, opens its engagement at the Temuka Theatre today. There have been aviation pictures before, but none that have presented the story of the unsung heroes of the government mail as “Air Mail” does. One of the most essentially dramatic phases of flying, “Air Mail” provides a substantial, gripping and romantic theme around which has been woven a very human story of devotion to duty and sacrifice with characters that live on the screen. Action, thrills, sustained, suspense, believable romance and story interest combine to make “Air Mail” a departure from the ordinary run of movie fare. It is something to see. Ralph Bellamy as the virile airport chief is perfectly cast and carries off his role with the most finished performance of his career. At the matinee, chapter three of the serial “Detective Lloyd” will also be screened.
