AUTOMOBILE ASSOCIATION. A meeting or the Waimate Automobfle Association was held on Friday. Present—Messrs G. A. Manchester (president), W. L. Geddes, J. Betten, W. Bell, E. Englebrecht, Rev. Jas. Hay, J. I. Hayman, M. Mcßae, E. J. Meredith, and J. Smillie. Mr Smillie reported having inspected McNamara’s Corner, and said that little could be done with it, but [ taking about three feet off the corner might improve the bend. —Mr Smillie was empowered to consult with the ! County engineer. A letter was received from the County Council stating that, in reply |to a request, the engineer had been instructed to improve the dangerous corner near Greelish’s at Waituna, and also the rough state of the tar-ssealed road from the railway crossing to Mr Ruddenklau's farm. The chairman stated that the road in question had been greatly improved, but he had not yet had an opportunity of examining the corner near Greelish's. The secretary of the South Island Motor Union forwarded copies of the minutes of the S.I.M.U. on May 16 and June 8, which were circulated amongst members. Notices were received from the S.I.M.U. that the following houses had been added to the official hotel list:— Hampden Hotel, Murchison: Kuraka Hotel. Queenstown; and the following had been struck off: The Hostel, Arthur’s Pass; Caerton Hotel, Dunback.

The secretary of the South Island Union also forwarded a copy of the business agenda for the quarterly meeting of delegates to be held in Dunedin on June 24th. It was resolved that the local delegate, Mr W. L. Geddes, be instructed to vote against the scheme for a road over Haast Pass, and to use his own discretion in voting re the quarterly motor registrations and the control of motor camps.

Rev. J. Hay reported that on the bridges between Otaio and Dempsey’s Corner, about 28 of the reflectors had either been damaged or removed, and it was decided to write to the headteachers of the Otaio and Makikihi Schools, and also to circularise the headmasters of all the schools in the district, to obtain their co-operation in explaining to the school children the reasons why the reflectors should not be interfered wdth, and also to ask them to draw the attention of the children to the Safety First posters issued to schools by the Sputh Island Motor Union. Accounts amounting to £2O 8s lid were passed for payment. W.C.T.U. The monthly meeting of the Waimate branch of the W.C.T.U. was held in the Knox Sunday School Hall. Mrs Roy presided over a fair attendance. The meeting opened with devotions, after which Mrs Kippenberger read a pamphlet entitled “My Birthday,” written by Mrs Perryman; also an article from the “White Ribbon.” Mr and Mrs Hayman rendered a vocal duet which was much appreciated. The serving of afternoon tea brought a happy afternoon to a close. MINIATURE RIFLES.
