WRESTLING
CONTEST IN TIMARU. The wrestling season will open in Timaru on Friday evening, when an international contest between Count Varga (Hungary) and “Whiskers” Blake (America) will be held in the Theatre Royal. The sport has made great progress in New Zealand this season. Much : the popularity can be attributed to the thrilling displays given by the American, Continental, and New Zealand wrestlers. The contestants in the coming contest have so far this season met with much success, and are considered to be among the first flight of the visiting grapplers. The Hungarian is of remarkable physique, and has proved himself a strong and aggressive opponent. Varga's style has appealed greatly to followers of the sport in the North Island. ) there is plenty of action in all his bouts. “Whiskers” Blake, apart from being the equal of any of the matmen at present competing, is noted for his striking personality. Hifj very long legs have proved most inconvenient to his opponents. The contest should prove the most scientific and thrilling yet witnessed in Timaru.
