The Waimataitai Ex-pupils’ Association, assisted by the North End Ratepayers’ Association and the Waimataitai School Committee, have already, held two dances in the past couple of months, for the fund'for building baths in the north end, and now advertise a third function to the held in the Bay Hall next Saturday. These dances are bright social gatherings. The two dances already held have netted quite a considerable sum, but it is believed that the increased interest being evinced in the bath’s project, now that work upon it is commencing, will have its reflection upon future efforts. The committee is exploiting every means to make the dance bigger and brighter than its forerunners. ..

It is expected that there will be developments in the near future in connection with the uncompleted East Coast railway, the construction upon which was stopped by the Government as an economy measure (says an exchange). There has been considerable agitation in the Hawke’s Bay and Poverty Bay districts over the completion of the East Coast railway. the object of enabling a basis to be arrived at upon which negotiations can be commenced. At present there is a gap of between four and five miles to complete and a large quantity of material is on the ground, including steel for the viaduct.
