BURDEN OF NATIONS’ WAR DEBTS
VIRTUE OF CANCELLATION Three years after the close of the world war, Dr. H. V. Drew, F.R.C.S. (Eng.), with almost prophetic vision wrote the following appeal to the United States, with the object of inducing the cancellation of war debts. TO U.S.A. i. Oh what a chance is thine, Results which will outlast time So simple, yet sublime. Don’t let it go — Oh to set right the tvorld, For which all flags unfurled, Nations to ruin hurled All steeped in woe! ii. Tour motive teas for right, Though you came late to fight You strove with all your might To help the cause. You did not look for gain! Yours was a grander aim! Yours was the right to fame! And world’s applause! in. Don’t lightly let it go For paltry gain, Hold fast your glorious past, Scorn greed and shame. Hold fast to great ideals, Whilst all creation reels, Crush wrong beneath your heels, America, stand fast! IV. Is not the world in chains ? New chains it’s true! Do they not chafe and fray, Though they are new f The old world is forlorn, For it there is no dawn, It does not cringe or fawn, But looks to you! ~ 11. V. Drew, F.R.C.S. (Eng.). (Copyright.)
