CHEAP BREAD

CONCESSION TO RELIEF WORKERS. AUCKLAND BAKERS’ SCHEME. By Telegrrapt— Press Association AUCKLAND, June 23. A proposal to provide relief workers with bread at 41 d a loaf during the winter months is being discussed by the executive of the Auckland Master Bakers' Association.

The scheme, which is dependent on the granting of a subsidy by other interests, involves the distribution of 720,000 loaves to genuine relief workers during the next three or four months. The price to be charged to relief workers under the scheme represents a reduction of 25 per cent, on the present standard price of 6d per loaf. The total cost of 720,000 loaves at standard price would be £IB,OOO, and the total reduction to relief workers would be £4,500.

In order to provide a subsidy to cover this amount, the Association has agreed to find £3OOO, providing the remainder—£ls,ooo is subscribed by relief organisations or other trade inThe executive of the Association has empowered the secretary to interview other interested bodies with a view to obtaining the additional money. If the fud subsidy is available, it is proposed that bread coupons, each valued at 6d, should be sold to relief workers at 4Jd. They would be accepted at their face value by any member of the Master Bakers Association, who could then redeem them at their face value at tr, office of the Association. Relief workers would have a wide choice, and would be able to purchase at a reduced price the bread which they personally considered the best. As far as possible, -it is intended that the coupons shall be issued to relief workers by existing relief organisations, with appropriate precautions against overlapping.
