Miniature Rifle Notes

Activities in South Canterbury

(By “303”)

Claremont Club: Shooting quite good it the men of the club will have to

wake up, as the ladies are improving considerably and I must congratulate Miss Armstrong on getting the Possible 80. She is also running 2nd in the club championship, being only three points behind the leader, Mr. F Black, who has 236. It would be very fine to see a lady get into the Representative team this year.

Otipua Club: Shooting just up to the district average. J. Hill was top scorer with 78.

Fareora and Fairview fired a friendly match at Pareora, which resulted in a win for Pareora. Things may be different when the return match is fired at Fairview. “The better they treat them there, the worse they shoot?” at least that is how some clubs found it.

Winchester Club: Did not shoot quite up to the mark this week being 2 points down. Miss L. Priddle, 77, was top scorer. The men slipped badly, being down over two points. W. R. Pearce and O. S. Priest were on top with 78 each.

Cave Club: Had a bad slip, being down 3 points each. Miss A. Gray is shooting well. She scored 79 this week, and wins the Gold Button.

Orari Ladies: Miss Gould and Mrs. W. Watson were top scorers, with 78 each, which is good shooting. The Orari men, likt a lot of other clubs, were down. F. Priddle was top scorer with 79. He seems to be getting back to his old form. Woodbury Club: A. Riches was top scorer with 78. The rest of the shooting could do with a bit of a lift. The Timaru Defence Rifle Range is being made into a very fine range, quite a lot of improvements having been effected of late. Several clubs have been using the locally manufactured miniature targets, and they seem quite satisfactory. I The Railway Club showing nearly one point improvement which is a little better but there is still room to go up, and then not have too many. The best scores were E. Shrimpton 80 and W. F. Scott 79. AU members of clubs within 12 miles of Timaru should read the report of the Timaru Miniature Association’s Annual meeting. It is in “The Timaru Herald” of Monday June 19. The Waimate Club are shooting the most consistently, 77.4. and there about every week. That is quite good, but a little more would be real good. F. Dungey got the lot, 80, and G. Davidson 79. Hook Club. Di;y rot seems to be setting in as they: are gradually going down each week. They did not even have a 79 this week. (They are the South Island Champion team). Perhaps they are saving their energy. Studholme Club: I am pleased to see they have their report in this week we miss them if they are not in. as we are all interested in one another’s shooting. Studholme’s performance is quite fair. J. Lindsay, J. Butters and G. Sullivan were the top scorers with 79 each. Glenavy Club: They are slipping at j the same rate as Hook. They want to i watch they don’t slip any further, or i they will be loosing the good name J they created at the beginning of the year. Their average was 76.9. Willow-bridge Club: They look like! the leading club at present. They are I coming up slowly but solidly, scoring | 78.1 this week. C. Blair got the pos- ! s:ble 80. He is shooting exceptionally j well, and is In the lead for the Club ; Championship.

The South Island Championship, both team and individual, will be fired in Timaru on the first Saturday in August. All riflemen should note this.

Hunter Club; Are just making a start after having their rifles returned. S. Ayrey 79 was top scorer for the week, the Club average being 75.8.

Morven Club: Shooting good, but nothing brilliant. They should do better. Three 78s were the top scores.

St. Patrick’s Club: The shooting is about the same. B. Jefferson seems to be too many for the rest of them. He was again top scorer with 77 this week.

Peel Forest Club: W. Jenkins was top scorer. The club average is down. I would suggest testing for lead.

Timaru Club: They are not shooting at all well, 77.7. This is no good for a club of its size. A Agnew and W. Falloon were top scorers with 79 each. W. Duncan still holds the lead for the championship, with 5 shoots gone. The scores are: Duncan 394, Baradshaw 392, C. Blackwood 392, W. Falloon 391 and A. Agnew 388. They are the leading five.

Peel Forest: This little club is not shooting very well. They would be well advised to examine their rifles.

Fairview Club: They are doing better, and we hope they will continue to do so. N. McVey was top scorer with

Pleasant Point: Still shooting the most consistantly of any club in South Canterbury, scoring 78 again this week. W. T. Taylor got a possible, and K. Hammond and C. Thoreau each got 79. W. T. Taylor is leading the club championship by one point from Henderson. The scores for seven shoots out of nine are: Taylor 549, Henderson 548, H. Roberts 547, K. Hammond 547, B. Wilson and H. Elms 546. This is a very keen championship, and should be very interesting before it is finished.

Timaru Fire Brigade: The back end of the team is shooting better, 76.1. That is above the average, and good when there is nothing above 78 in the count.

The Gleniti Club: Seems to be going off a bit, though there some good shoots recorded. They are coming from unexpected quarters, and it is doubtful if they will keep them up. G. Heslop got the possible 80, and J. Blamires 79. This man is shooting very well lately, and if he keeps his form, should stand a good chance of a place in the Representatives this year.

Gleniti defeated Claremont in the first round of the Watson Cup.

The Winchester Cup (the New Zealand Shoot) must be completed by tonight.

The Pleasant Point Club still hold the Timaru Challenge Shield. There seems to be no other club good (or game enough) to try and take it.
