PEEL FOREST

THE WEATHER. During the first ten days of June, rain fell on six days, and a total of 106 points of rain was recorded. The weather over the week-end was dull but fine. HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY. A special meeting of the working committee of the Peel Forest Horticultural Society was . held recently. Present—Messrs W. E. Barker (chairman), S. W. Marsh, Rev. T. Stinson. Mesdames L. Heney, W. Macphail, and Miss O. M. Barker (secretary). A vote of congratulation was passed to Sir Hugh Aeland, one of the Society’s patrons, on his recently conferred knighthood. Judges for the spring flower show were appointed as follows, subject to their being able to act: Cut flowers, Mr Anderson (Timaru Park); decorative, Mrs J. M. H. Tripp (“Silverton”); home industries, Mrs G. Macdonald (Orari); produce and cookery, Mrs Hislop and Mr A. Bryant (Geraldine); school section, Miss A. Hughes (Geraldine). Special prizes -were allotted to the spring show schedule. ST. BARNABAS GUILD^ The monthly meeting of St. Barnabas Guild was held in the Sunday School last Thursday afternoon. Mrs G. Dennistoun presided, and other members present were: Mesdanui, D. G. Rutherford, T. Stinson, W. E. Barker, C. Wooding, Y. Robinson, F. Claydon, W. Inglis, O. Keen, L. Heney, G. Wooding, and W. Macphail, Misses J. Cliffe, and O. Stinson. A card from the Rector of St. Saviour’s Orphanage, was read, thanking the Guild few their gift of clothing. Many useful and attractive articles were handed in by members, as gifts fur the work, stall, for the annual bazaar, to be held towards the end of the year. Further work was discussed, and material distributed for making into garments. Mrs F. Claydon and Mrs O. Keen dispensed afternoon tea at the close of the meeting. CRIBBAGE. A cribbage match between residents of the Peel Forest and Rangitata districts. was held in the Peel Forest Hall on Friday evening- After an interesting contest Peel Forest proved to be the winners by 53 games to 38. Mr C. Poleschek, on behalf of the visitors, thanked the Peel Forest players for the enjoyable night's entertainment. Mr E. Foden suitably replied. Supper was provided. A return match at Rangitata will take place next month. HALL COMMITTEE. A meeting of the Peel Forest Hall Committee was held on Friday night to discuss the replacement of the hall piano, which has become a menace to the building, as it contains borer. No decision was reached, and another meeting is to be held shortly. The secretary, Mr W. Macphail. was instructed to write to Sir Hugh Aeland, congratulating him on his election to knighthood. OPOSSUM TRAPPING. For the first time for many years, two months, June and July, have been declared an open season for the trapping of opossums in South Canterbury, this whiter. Several trappers are operating in the Peel Forest district. Most unfavourable conditions were experienced the first week of this month, but since the weather has improved, trappers have reported better catches.
