The Seadown folk dancing class commenced its second year, with an evening in the school on Monday. There was a very good attendance, and an enjoyable evening was spent. Mr and Mrs W. E. Cook, of Qrari, were present, and the thanks of the class were due to them for the very able way in which the following dances were conducted:—“Hit and Miss,” "Lady Speller,” "The Old Mole,” “The Phoenix,” "Sallenger’s Round.” “The Phoenix,” the test piece for the competitions at Temuka, was specially commented upon by Mr Cook, and some very useful information was given to the dancers. Among those present were:—Mesdames Cook, Kennedy, McCully, Hewson, Green, Williams, Misses M. McCully, A. Columb, B. Hewson, B. Brosnahan, S. Hendry, M. Hewson, M. Columb, S. Hide, Messrs Cook, Columb, Williams.

Miss Nelle Scanlan, who has been visiting Australia, returned to Wellington recently by the Makura. Speaking of Australian writers. Miss Scanlan said that there was a mistaken idea widespread among them that English publishers were definitely prejudiced against Australian writings. When the less successful authors found their attempts rejected by English publishers, instead of concluding that their standard was not good enough, they immediately decided that it was "prejudice” against them that spoilt their chances of success. The reaction to this, said Miss Scanlan, was that Australian publishers were accepting works by their own writers which did not reach the standard required by English publishing houses, and there was danger of the standard being permanently lowered. One fact noticeable in all the parts of Australia which Miss Scanlan visited, was that the depression was referred 1o always in the past tense. This, Miss Scanlan remarked, was an indication that there, at least, the people considered the worst to be over. Exhibiting a very charming cover design, executed by Mr Nugent Welch for her new novel, “Tides of Youth,” Miss Scanlan stated that his second volume of her New Zealand saga would arrive in Wellington this week. Miss Scanlan will return to England some time in July. Latest Visitors. At the Empire:—Mr J. Simpson, Miss A. M. C. Davie, Mrs M. A. Tombs (Dunedin), Mr G. W. Gamer (Auckland), Mr L.
