RIFLE NOTES

(By 303). Fairview Club: There are a few men shooting fair, but the back half of the club are not shooting as they should. They would do well to have their rifles tested for lead.

Makikihi Club: W. Gorinski is to the front again, with a possible. He seems outstanding in the club. The rest are shooting only fair.

Cave Club: F. Taylor 78 was top scorer, the rest being fairly even. Pleased to see the ladies always near the top of the list.

The shooting of the Orari ladies is fair. Mrs. F. Priddle 77 was top scorer this week. This is quite good shooting for a lady. The club, all counted, averaged 73.3.

Orari Men: Good average shooting, seeing that they are counting practically every man. 76.5 average. W. Earl, E. R. O’Neill and J. Hewson, each 78, were the top scorers.

Temuka Club: The shooting of this club is fair, the average being 75.2. J. Bennett and V. Nicholas were on top with 78. I should say V. Nicholas will be a hard man in the Club Championship this year.

Temuka Ladies: Most of the team are shooting about the same, but they will soon improve. Miss H. Cain and Mrs. Templeton were equal top scorers.

Winchester Men:. Not so good this week. The leading men put on good shooting. A. H. Opie, D. Louden and W. Waple, each 79, were the top scorers.

Winchester Ladies: The shooting was up to last week. Miss L. Priddle and Mrs. W. Reilly were top scorers with 75 each.

St. Patrick’s Club held their annual meeting last Tuesday when there were several changes among the officers. Mr. L. McKeefry has retired from the office of President, which he has held for quite a long time and carried out his duties well. The club is fortunate in securing the services of Mr. J. Batchelor as president. Mr. Batchelor is a very capable man, and I feel sure he will do all that can be expected of a president. I must congratulate Mr. B. Jefferson in taking the position of vice-president. With J. Healy as secretary the club should go ahead.

Washdyke Club: The standard of shooting is low, and could do with a lift, though the same men seem to be at the top most of the time. R. Moore was top scorer with 78. The club average was 73.8.

Four Peaks: The club was 73, but there were only seven men shooting, and when a club has to count every score for the average it makes it hard. R. Ford was top scorer with 78.

The Timaru Club fell down again on Monday night, 77.8 which is poor scoring for the number they have shooting. The best scores were W. Duncan 80, P. Foden and C. Blackwood 79 each. There were two with 78.

Gleniti was again defeated in their attempt to take the Timaru Challenge Shield from Pleasant Point. We must congratulate Point on their being able to hold It for a further term, and we must also congratulate Gleniti on their enterprise in trying to take it. They are a keen, progressive club, and that is more than we can say about some of our other big clubs, as far as the shield is concerned.

Otipua Club: Members seem to be shooting about the same. No bad shooting, but by the same rule, no good shooting. T. Hughes was the top scorer with 78.

Pareora Club: The shooting is much better this week, 76.8 This is a great improvement on the last few weeks. E. Brehaut and J. Scott were top scorers with 79 each.

In the Point v. Gleniti Shield match last week, there was only one possible registered, and that was made by G. Henderson, of Point. There were only two with 69. They were H. Roberts and H. Elms, both of Point.

The Society of Miniature Rifle Clubs forbid the use of repeating or magazine on any miniature range. This is a rule which should be carried out to the letter of the word in New Zealand, as it is most dangerous to use either of these rifles, in case a live cartridge be left in and accidentally discharged after the shooter leaves the mound.

The weight of the bullet used on the miniature ranges to-day is 40 grains, and -the length of the cartridge 1.1 inch.

Every young shot should learn to set his own rifle, and remember his setting (write it down).

Waimate Club: 77.1 this week. They have just got their new rifles, or at least, New Parker barrels. We cannot expect too much from them for a couple of weeks yet. lam pleased to see W. D. Paterson on top with 79. He is one of the old shots, who has been like a lot more, (too old to shoot).

Willowbridge Club: Like Hunter and Waimate, they have just received their new barrels, and we must excuse them this week. C. Blair, possible 80, was top scorer, and J. C. Faulkner was next with 79.

Hilton Club: The average was exactly the same as last week, 77. They are not going back any, and that is in their favour. R. Meredith secured the possible 80 and W. Scott 79.

Claremont Club slipped badly this week, down over a point per man, the average being only 75.2. F. Black was top scorer with 79 and J. Green was next with 78.

St. Pat’s: The shooting was slightly better than last week, 76.6. J. Healy was the top scorer with 79, B. Jefferson being next with 78.

Mt. Nessing Rifle Club: I am pleased to see a report from these people again. For such a small club, they have started off well with 75.3. This is good shooting.

Railway Club: A slight improvement on last week’s shooting, the average being 75. Pleased to see J. Tutty at the head of the list with 79.

The Fire Brigade Club are back nearly one point per man this week. This club is not shooting up to its old standard as it used to be one of the hardest clubs in the South Island. J. Moore put up the best shoot for the week with 79, and there was only one 78.

The Tisdall Cup (A New Zealand shoot) was won by Hastings, with 497. They are to be congratulated on thenfine score. Timaru A Team and Gleniti tied for 12th place with 486. The scores of the Timaru A team we re:—W. Duncan 99, A. Agnew 98, W. Bradshaw 97, P. Foden 97, C. Blackwood 97—486 The Gleniti Team were J. Hull 100, C. Paine 99, R. Tate 98, A. Bone 95, W. Brehaut 97 —486. The individual scores count for the N.Z. Championship average.

Hook Rifle Club: Shooting up now —it looks more like their old form, with 78.3. A. Kingsbury and ‘C. Medlicott with a possible 80 each, and F. Medlicott and L. Rathgen with 79 each.

Pleasant Valley: The shooting is not so good this week. They have slipped one point per man. There were no good scores at aIL

Peel Forest Club: The shooting has not come up to even a fair standard but we will expect more in a week or two. The club average is only 69.1 at present. W. Jenkins was the top scorer for the week.

It looks as if we will have to send a wreath to the two Geraldine Clubs. I am afraid they are dead.

Pleasant Point Club: The shooting is quite solid, the average being 78. A club such as Point should not be below 78 at any time. There were no possibles this week. W. Taylor, G. Henderson, and F. B. Wilson each got 79.

Woodbury Club: The shooting of the club was good, but low scores pulled the average back considerably. K. Quaid was again at the head.

Gleniti Club: The shooting was not ’. up to the usual standard, the average being down to 76.9. C. Paine and C. Wilson were the top scorers with 79 each. Miss de Joux was the best 8 among the ladies, with 76.

Pleasant Point had a match. Married v. Single, which resulted in a win for the Single men.

The annual meeting of the Timaru Defence Rifle Club was held on Wednesday night, when the following officers were elected: President, W. Duncan (re-elected), senr. vice-presi-dent, Mr. C. H. Johnson. Mr. W. E. Jones did not seek re-election. Mr. R. Parker was elected to the position of junior vice-president. Mr. M. Higgins was re-elected secretary and treasurer. Mr. M. Healy was elected club handicapper.

The Territorials had a visit from the General this week. They must have been so excited that they have forgotten to let us have their shooting report this week. THE HONOURS LIST
