TOUR OF WALLABIES
SHIP TRAINING LIMITED In the report to the New South Wales Rugby Union the manager of the “Wallabies,” Dr. W. F. Matthews, states that the players, who are travelling by the Ulysses to South Africa, have had difficulty with regard to training, following complaints by passengers. "The majority of the passengers are either old or convalescing from nervous breakdowns, and they complain about the least noise or disturbance,” writes Dr. Matthews. “Some passengers complained to the captain of the ship regarding noise and henceforth we have the use of the deck for exercise in the morning only, from 9 to 11. This is not enough. Owing to the attitude of a minority of the passengers, it is going to be very difficult to give the team sufficient exercise.” Dr. Matthews commented on the marked progress being made by the Rugby Union game in Victoria. “The executive of the Victorian Rugby Union is working hard," he wrote, “and is now definitely establishing the game in the Great Public Schools. I think it reasonable to expect that in four or five years it will replace the Australian Rules game in the big schools.”
