NEW ZEALAND OPINIONS. Canada and Ourselves. The Canadian Manufacturers’ Association wish to foster goodwill in this country, which has proved a promising market for their wares, which with prosperity restored, might be capable of much further development. Whether the influence of the manufacturers is likely to neutralise in politics the force of objections the dairy farmers consistently offer to any considerable importation of New Zealand butter is the e Lion on which depends any chance of the plan being adopted. Those difficulties being recognised, the proposal can be considered for what it contains. It would certainly be preferable, on the face of it, that some certainty should be recognised that unless a great change comes over Canadian opinion as expressed politically, there is no chance of New Zealand butter being allowed to compete in that market.—*‘New Zealand Herald.” Encouraging Self-Help. The statement of the Minister of Employment, the Hon. A. Hamilton, in regard to the relief worker who obtains other work should clear the air. The Government’s policy is, says Mr. Hamilton, to offer all possible encouragement to the relief worker who obtains even a little temporary private employment. Hitherto some have feared to take a small job offered lest it should prevent them from reporting for relief work on the day allocated This difficulty is to be overcome by an alteration in the regulation, and a cale to cover private earnings and payments from relief funds has also been drawn up. It is difficult to prevent leakages in public funds and yet leave their disbursement flexible enough to meet the varying circumstances of relief workers. The Minister's assurance that efforts toward self-help will be encouraged should stimulate further efforts in that direction/*Taranaki Daily News.”
