rugby; The senior game in the Waimate Rugby Sub-Union’s competitions, which was played at Morven on Thursday afternoon, attracted a fair attendance of spectators, who were treated to an excellent exhibition of football. The game was fast and interesting/ particularly in the second spell, when the ball was freely thrown about by either side, and the fortunes of the opposing teams constantly varied, play being taken up and down field in good passing rushes. Huimai eventually proved victorious by 11 points to six, the winning score comprising two tries by N. Cumming, and one by J. Fraser, a conversion being registered by T. Wesley. Southern’s scores were a try and penalty goal registered by W. Deady. Mr J. K. Clarke was referee. RUGBY LECTURE. On Wednesday night Mr H. C. Foster delivered a lecture to Sub-Union officials, players and supporters in Mr Brenton’s office on the rules of Rugby. He gave a detailed explanation of many phases* of the rules, and at the conclusion answered a number of questions, for which he was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. HEAVY FROST. A sharp frost totalling 16 degrees was registered at the Waimate Observatory yesterday morning. GOLF. High School I. defeated Studholme by 7 points to 6. C Grade. Primary No. 1 defeated High School 11. by 19 points to 3. High School No. 1 defeated Convent by 16 points to 12. FUNERAL'. funeral of the late Mr R. A. Richards, of Elephant Hill, took place at Waimate yesterday afternoon. A very long cortege of mourners comprised representatives of farming and commercial interests resident not only in the Waimate district, but from many localities of Mid and North Canterbury and Otago. Many handsome floral tributes bore further testimony to the esteemed respect in which the deceased gentleman was held. The pall-bearers were Messrs A. V. Richards, Rupert Harrison, L. W. Leslie, J. Mcßae, J. Cotton (Christchurch), and L. Richards (Mount Hutt).

The burial services at both St. Augustine's Church and at the Waimate cemetery were conducted by Rev. A. K. Warren.
