DISPLAY BY WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

The efficiency of the organisation of the South Canterbury Federation of Women’s Institutes was manifested yesterday afternoon, when a remarkable arts and crafts exhibition was held in the Bay Hall. The hall was crowded, in fact, almost too much crowded, when the display was opened by the Mayoress (Mrs T. W. Satterthwaite), who in a few well-chosen words congratulated the promoters and wished them every success. Mrs Satterthwaite, who wore a winecoloured frock with short fur coat and smart black hat was presented with a bouquet of chrysanthemums by the Federation. Mrs L. E. Williams, president of the Federation, in a characteristic speech amused those present with a witty description of the many trials through which the members had passed in preparing for the exhibition. The display embraced knitting, articles made from skins and wool, tapestry, papier mache and marquetry which bore out the artistry and craftmanship of members. In the wool section, sheep-skin rugs cured and dyed, tapestry rugs, raw wool for cushions and mattresses were shown and the übiquitous knitted jumper was to be seen in every shade and design. The skin of the sheep was utilised in every possible way, moccasins and gloves being most attractive. At the far end of the hall was a unique exhibition of antiques, many of them of a great age. Chairs and tables of quaint design, old chests with their brass bound edges and a most uncommon work table in an original design. There were numerous exhibits of brass ware, an interesting one being a bell from a temple in Thibet. Another exhibit was a collection of pewter the shape of Which showed its antiquity. Some members exhibited old jewellery, beautiful cameos and antique lockets being much admired. Afternoon tea was served by the members and music during the afternoon was given by the Misses Spring (2), and Miss Ward.
