The Committee felt that there were many who would like to subscribe to such an object, and the secretary and members of the Committee were willing to receive donations. TO-DAY’S RUGBY MATCH. The Geraldine first grade team will try conclusions with Star on the Geraldine Oval this afternoon. Star are as yet unbeaten, and the Red and Blacks have shown improving form and combination. Geraldine surprised at Pleasant Point in their last match, and it is anticipated that the home side will extend the visitors.

A curtain raiser will be played between Geraldine fifths and High School B. Although the local boys have not a win to their credit as yet, they have been displaying improved form. The fourths travel to Temuka, where they will meet the leading team in that grade, while the thirds will try conclusions with School’s combination at Timaru. PERSONAL. Miss E. Mcllroy has returned from a visit to Christchurch. Captain Banyard, advance agent of the Church Army Party from England, will be the guest of Canon anMrs J. F. Coursey this week-end. Captain Banyard will preach at the parish service in St. Mary’s to-morrow evening. “EGYPT AND ITS TOMBS.’’ An afternoon of unusual interest was enjoyed by an enthusiastic audience in the Town Hall when a lecture on “Egypt and Its Tombs’’ was given under the auspices of the Geraldine branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers' Union.

The speaker. Mr Herbert Hall {Timaru), was introduced by the president, Mrs M. Burdon. The lecture was illustrated with beautiful lantern slides. Mr Hall introduced the subject of Tutankhamen’s tomb in a novel manner with a brief outline of religious beliefs held in ancient Egypt, explaining the hieroglyphics in several of the pictures. He thus made an enthralling story of the treasures contained in the tomb.

Mr Hall showed a lantern slide, a photo which he had taken in Egypt, of natives w r orking an hydraulic device, such as those in use on the banks of the Nile 5000 years ago. The simple Egyptians accompanied their work by a folk song, which was in reality a rendering of a hymn to the ancient Egyptian Sun-G<xl Ra, and the song and the device remained unchanged in 5000 years. The members of the W.D.F.U. dispensed afternoon tea at the close of the lecture, when Mr Hall was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. HOCKEY. In tne match, Geraldine v Winchester, played at Geraldine on Thursday, and which ended in a draw, neither side scoring, the Geraldine team showed great improvement, and had the best of Winchester right throughout the match, and they -were very unfortunate in not scoring. The match proved one of the best ladies’ games played in Geraldine for a considerable time. The referees were Messrs K. Cowie and C. S. Davies. The Geraldine ladies deserve great credit for the spick and span manner in wh'eh they took the field, and their appearance should prove an object lesson to the members of the men’s teams who were arrayed in multi-coloured uniforms. Men’s Match. The game between Northern and Union, two of the Geraldine Men’s Club’s teams, proved a fast and hotly contested match from start to finish. There was very little difference between the teams, but the game was somewhat rough at times. The game ended seven goals to five in Union's favour. J. Callanan (3). W. Angland (.), D. Callanan (1) and L. Wood (1) scored for Union, and P. McShane (21, J. S. Lor.mer (1), G. Webb (1). and R. Hayes (1), netted goals for Northern. The referees were Messrs H. J. Bowkett and J. Henry. SPLENDID DOUBLE PROGRAMME. A double feature programme will be screened at the Municipal Theatre this evening Gene Gerrard. who scored such a ’ “hit" in “My Wife’s Family,“ plays the leading role in “Lucky Girl, a romantic British musical comedy filled with scintillating humour. The second feature wi 11 be England Awakes,” an epic of the progress of the British Empire during the past one hundred years. The picture is an unusual one, which gives a graphic idea of the Empire on which “the sun never sets “ The second cricket test Australia v. England, in which Larwood introduced the deadly body-line bowling, which has aroused a world-wide controversy, will prove an interesting support. A Pathetone Novelty News will complete the programme. NOTES. The Pleasant Valley Tennis Club have booked July 7th for a dance. Mr L. Allison, electrician. Talbot Street. Geraldine, notifies that he has commenced business in Geraldine.
