HUNTING
MEET AT WAITAWA. Conditions were well-night perfect for Wednesday’s meet at Waitawa, but a superfluity of hares, though they gave the followers a great deal of galloping and jumping, made individual runs hard to describe, and gave hounds little chance of sticking to one hare. Hounds were thrown off in Mr Harper’s, and a hare was almost immediately viewed away. Unfortunately it proved rather a weak one, for after running through one of Mr Harper's paddocks and a couple of Mr Oliver’s, hounds pulled her down. Another hare found in Mr Oliver’s took a pretty line across the flat, and up on to the high downs and into Mr Crossman’s. A couple of circuits of Mr Crossman's farm, with probable changes, saw hounds carry the line through into Mr Brophy’s, and then down to the Levels Velley Road. Here the pack swung right-handed, and once more, up on to the downs and back into Mr Crossman”s, across several of his paddocks, and then the pack ran clean out of scent at the back of his homestead. A move was then made to Kerrytown, and hounds were cast off in one of Mr Brosnahan’s paddocks which proved a sure find. The pack streamed away at a great pace through Messrs Brosnahan’s and Foley’s, and back through Mr Brosnahan’s and out on to the Point-Arowhenua Road. A slight check and some slow hunting saw the pack finally beaten. Another quite good run took place through Messrs Brosnahan’s, Brian’s, Friel’s and Scott’s, and finally back into Mr Brosnahan’s, where hares proved rather numerous and hounds were finally packed up. The famous Kerrytown country took its usual toll of a few empty saddle-, but on the whole the exhibition given by the field was splendid, and the jumping over two rasping wire fences was worth going a long way to see. Those out were—The Master (Mr C. L. Orbeli) on Gambler; Huntsman (J. Shaw) on Geordie; acting whip (B. Shaw) on Gay Rona; Mrs Ford on Kitty Lynn, Miss C. Elworthy on Peter, Miss J. Elworthy on Susan, Miss Rolleston on Mustang. Miss Murphy on Waikawa, Miss D. Orbeli on Kingfisher. N. Orbeli on Mah Jong, Miss B. Harper on Captain Murphy, Miss S. Orbeli on Tycho, Miss J.
