H. Lowry, Okawa, Hawke’s Bay. The knitting craze has now spread to theatre audiences in Wellington, and whereas formerly the woman at the back used to rattle a bag of sweets during the more touching parts of the love scenes, she now gives a few vicious clicks of her knitting needles, says the “Dominion.” Sometimes she does both. At one theatre a glance from the front of the dress circle revealed that no fewer than thirty women in the centre block of the stalls were busy knitting. At the Wesley Church, Perth, Western Australia, on May 8, the marriage took place of Rita Gladys Brehaut and Eric Campbell Martin, of Temuka. Mrs Martin is a daughter of Mr and Mrs W. Brehaut, of Hassall Street, Timaru, and her husband is the son of Mrs Martin and the late Mr Alex Martin, of Shaw Street, Temuka. Mr and Mrs Martin are at present living •in Perth.

All was cheerfulness and warmth at Government House on Saturday evening when Their Excellencies the Governor-General and Lady Bledisloe gave a reception in honour of the King’s birthday. Potted cyclamen and palms and ferns attractively decorated the reception hall and drawing-rooms, where log fires blazed merrily. The gathering was a very representative one, and the feminine portion of it was brilliantly gowned. Lady Bledisloe was a charming figure in ivory satin radiante, embroidered in a leaf design with diamante and seed pearls, worn with a diamond and pearl tiara. His Excellency wore the full dress of a Privy Councillor. Mrs G. C. Veale was gowned in kingfisher blue chenille embossed georgette, and Miss Diana Harris wain amber lace with ruchings of amber ribbon. Mrs Vernon Reed, Bay of Islands, who is a guest at Government House, was frocked in green floral chiffon. The Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates and Mrs Coates were among the guests, and another outstanding couple were Sir Michael and Lady Myers. Mrs Averill, who accompanied the Archbishop, looked very charming in an orchid mauve frock. One of the most striking gowns was that of Mrs Burges Watson. Fashioned of gold broche, it flared at the back into a slight train. The Mayor, Mr Geo. W. Hutchison, and Mrs Hutchison were also present.
