ASHBURTON LADIES’ TOURNEY. MISS HORWELL LEADS FIRST ROUND. The first annual Mid-Canterbury women’s golf championships to he played at Ashburton were commenced on the links yesterday, when a cold south-west wind made playing conditions very unpleasant. The links were in excellent order, the greens being particularly keen, and several senior players returned good scores. Arranged by the women's section .)f the Ashburton Golf Club, the tournament attracted 67 entries from various parts of Canterbury, and the present New Zealand women’s senior golf champion, Mrs Templer, of Waimate, and a number of Christchurch and Timaru players competed. The events comprise senior and junior championships, medal and bogey matches and a four-ball open bogey match. The first round of the senior and junior championships and the first medal match were played in the morning Miss Jean Horwell (Timaru) returned a card of 80, 1 up on Miss M. Beadel (Christchurch). First Medal Match. The senior medal match in the morning was won by Miss Stevenson, Christchurch, with a card of 87-15-72. Miss Langley (Ashburton) won the junior match, her score being 105-35-70.
