SEADOWN

SCHOOL BREAK-UP. The break-up of the Seadown School took place on Friday afternoon, when a most enjoyable afternoon was spent by both parents and pupils. Contests between the two school clubs, Brown and Yellow, were much enjoyed by the pupils. The first was a football match, which Yellow annexed by 11 points to nil. In this game A. Cargo and L. Edgar distinguished themselves, while R. Hewson and L. Darling played well for the losers. The basketball resulted in a win for Brown by 6 goals to nil. P. Cooper and Z. Knowles proving very good shooters. A game of tag, made up of the rules of football, soccer and basketball, was very closely contested. Yellow prevailing by 3 goals to 2. At the close of the games the spectators repaired to the school, where the pupils had erected a stage and converted the room into a concert hall. About 20 parents listened to a concert programme entirely organised by the pupils and their monitors, and these were heartily applauded. The items were as follows:—Come to the Fair, senior pupils; pianoforte, Muriel Hughes; “I Saw a Ship Sailing,” N. Hide, M. Williams, N. Fitzgerald, P. Gillies, J. Dunnett;; pianoforte duet, M, and L. Edgar; recitation. Alan Cargo; “I Had a Little Pony,” M. Williams, J. Dunnett, S. Seyb, R. Taipana and P. Gillies; “Topsy,” M. O’Connor, M. Edgar and G. Brosnahan; recitation, Arthur Hide; “Billy Boy” sketch, I. O’Connor, J. Williams, B. Gillies, and B. Davies; recitation, “Adsum,” Michael Seyb. The concert over, parents were entertained at afternoon tea in the senior room, after which the entire school, bedecked with coloured hats, marched in for their refreshments. During a lull in the afternoon tea, the headmaster, Mr A. G. Williams, introduced Mr Pemberton, of Clandeboye, whom he asked to make a presentation to four pupils on behalf of the Committee, for good work done in their school plots during the past season. Mr Pemberton told the pupils how lucky they were, for when he went to school there were no such things as garden plots. Nowadays pupils were well catered for, and they were fortunate in having such a good Committee. He called upon Margaret Edgar, Gertrude Brosnahan, Sam Milliken and Colin Cooper to receive their prizes. These pupils were lustily cheered by their fellow scholars, and three cheers were given for Mr Pemberton. On the call of Mr Pemberton, cheers were given for the teachers, Miss Seyb and Mr Williams. The headmaster, in reply, stated that this function would be but the forerunner of many more to come, and that the staff were grateful for the support accorded them by the parents. Before calling on the pupils to give cheers for the parents and the Committee, he reminded those present school would resume on May 22nd, and that children who attained their sixth birthday during the next term must start school within the first four weeks. Honours List. The honours list of the school is as follows Standard X.—Peggy Gillies, Ivan Hedley, John Hewson. Standard II. —Brian O’Connor, Natalie Hide, Margaret Williams. Standard 111. —Basil Mahoney, John Cromie, Jean Williams. Standard IV.—Jack McCully, Muriel Hughes, Ivan Oldfield. Form I.—Arthur Hide, Michael Seyb, Betty Gillies. Form ll.—Mary O'Connor, Alan Cargo, Gertrude Brosnahan. The attendance at the school has been outstanding, for the term’s record shows over 97 per cent., and 28 pupils are credited with full attendance. This is due to the encouragement given by the Committee in providing certificates for good attendance. PERSONAL. Mrs W. Bowden, Haumoana. Hawke's Bay, is the guest of Mr and Mrs W. McCully, Seadown. Mr K. McNaughton. headmaster of Kaiata School, Westland, is the guest of Mr and Mrs J. W. Topham for the vacation. PEDIGREE CATTLE SALE, One of the largest sales of pedigree cattle held in South Canterbury for some time took place at Mr R. J. Edgar’s, Seadown, last Thursday. Competition among buyers was better than anticipated, but the prices realised were only what one would naturally expect of a herd that had been so patiently moulded after years of judicious culling. It is to be regretted that Ml’ Edgar is giving up active participation in herd-testing, for so highly has his herd been rated that breeders were present from as far south as the Taieri and as far north as the Ellesmere, to procure stock for their own herds. Over 200 buyers were present, and the stock produced were in splendid condition.
