The “Sunday Express” describes the Suez Canal as one of the greatest barriers to Empire prosperity. The British Treasury has persistently failed to support ship owners’ demands for a reduction of tolls. Fifty-six per cent, of the shipping using the Canal is British and six per cent. French, yet France holds the balance of power. The only hope of a reduction is that the British Government will appeal to Egypt, which is empowered to call an International Conference on the subject.
