WHEAT FOR ABROAD
HEAVY SHIPMENT TO LEAVE TIMARU. DESTINATION OF STEAMER UNDISCLOSED. What appears to be the utmost secrecy is being observed in regard to the destination of the steamer Dalmore which is expected to reach Timaru on Monday trom Westport to commence loading 70,000 sacks of wheat in bulk for overseas. In view of a possible surplus of two to three million bushels of wheat in New Zealand, and the fact that millers are well stocked, and the stores are holding fair quantities, the Wheat Purchase Board have looked around for fresh markets. That they have found them—at a price—appears certain by the recent shipment from Lyttelton, and the coining cargo to be taken from this port. A representative of “The Timaru Herald” made inquiries yesterday, but these failed to throw any light on the destination of the Dalmore. exoept that it was conjectured that the shipment might be part of a contract entered into between the Board and Chinese operators. It was also hinted that the wheat might be for another country, as the negotiations on the part of the Board to dispose of the surplus covered a very wide range. The agents for the vessel intimated that they did not know whither she was bound, while similar statements were expressed by grain merchants. It was stated that the proposed shipment, which will be in the vicinity of 7000 tons, will be the largest cargo of wheat to be taken from this port for many years, and that it will be the only bulk shipment of any consequence to ever leave Timaru. The Dalmore is a British ship of 5193 tons gross, and is registered under the flag of the United Steam Navigation Company. It will be her first visit to Timaru. It was stated yesterday that there was every possibility that further wheat would be taken from Timaru by the Pakeha, which is expected to carry out Homeward loading here on May 25th.
