VICE-REGAL TOUR TO SAMOA

ROUND OF INTERESTING CEREMONIES.

Special to Press Association. (By Radio.) APIA, April 23. The first year of the Yaws injection campaign, which will be spread over three years, has just been completed. The results are as good as could be expected. Over 74,000 injections were given by native medical practitioners, working under the direction of Dr. Ernest Hunt, Chief Medical Officer of Western Samoa.

The campaign is being conducted by the Western Pacific Health Service, in conjunction with the Rockefeller Foundation in the Western Pacific, the headquarters being at Suva. Their Excellencies visited the Apia hospital on Saturday morning and were greatly interested in the splendid work of the institution.

Rugby football as played in Samoa, was witnessed by their Excellencies on Saturday afternoon. The ground, unfortunately, was in bad condition owing to the recent heavy rains. The temperature was 85 degrees in the shade.

The visitors were welcomed by Father Diehl, who expressed a hope that when Samoa was ready to send a team to New Zealand they would have the assistance of the Administration, perhaps to the extent of granting free passages in the Maui Pomare. Lord Bledisloe paid a tribute to the standard of play and the spirit of sportsmanship shown. He would make clear to the football authorities in New Zraland that the game was developing on right lines. He hoped the Ca moan Union would make satisfactory arrangement with the Maui Pomare for passages, and that a team o; Samoans would play leading teams in New Zealand. The referee in the senior game, D other Bernadine, was formerly of Chi istehurch. The citizens’ ball at night was a brilliant success. There was a large attendance, thoroughly representative of the community. Torpedo-Lieutenant Ryan of the Diomude is remaining in Apia to undergo an operation for appendicitis.
