Mr John Kennedy, chairman of the Geraldine Unemployment Committee, has received the following letter, dated April 21st, from the Commissioner of Unemployment, Wellington:— “I am in receipt of your letter of the 12th inst., with reference to the amount of the allocation for unemployment relief in Geraldine, particularly in regard to the allocation for the week ending April 22nd. In reply I have to inform you that it was possible on the basis of the latest registrations to make a supplementary allocation of £lB/10/- for the week in question, and this was arranged. The allocation for the week ending April 29th has been reviewed by the Unemployment Board, and, as a result, arrangements were made to place same on an improved basis, and the Certifying Officer has been advised of the additional funds granted.—Yours faithfully, H. Godfrey. Commissioner.” The Geraldine Unemployment Committee, however, were of opinion that, in view of the unemployed smallholders being replaced on the No. 5 Scheme, the increase of £lB/10/- was insufficient, and further representations were made to the Board, which granted an increase of £33/5/-. The Department of Agriculture investigated the position in connection with the No. 4a Scheme to employ small-holders on their own land. The report of the Superintendent showed that there were only two cases in the Geraldine district in which the men could be engaged on their own land under 4a Scheme. Consequently the remainder (about 26 men) have been replaced on the No. 5 Scheme. Under the present allocation the allotment of work weekly is as follows: Single men, one day; married men with one child and those without children, two days; married men with two children, two and a-half days; married men with three children, three days; married men with four chlidren, four and a-half days; and married men with five children or more, four days.
