In Mrs Franklin D. Roosevelt Uncle Sam has secured a new “First Lady” who is a woman of notable character and business acumen. One enterprise of hers is a furniture shop, called the Val-kil. A great study in expression is a picture just received showing the extraordinary session of Congress assembled to pass President Roosevelt’s emergency bank legislation during the recent crisis. Seated there, hatless, serene of face and busily knitting, is Mrs Roosevelt, while all around her in j the Presidential box are faces plunged I in abysmal depths of dejection, j Mrs Iva Clarke (formerly Miss Iva j Poole) left New Zealand sixteen years i ago for Australia. She has been for i the past ten years engaged in journalism. For seven years she has been social editress of the “Daily Telegraph,” and has now been appointed

editress for the social column of !he “Country Life,” which newspaper has a large circulation in New South Wales. Some weeks ago when she severed her association with the Associated Newspapers Company, a large party of Sydney’s leading social and philanthropic workers, under the presidency of Lady Benjamin Fuller, met and presented her with an illuminated address bearing the signatures of 400 representatives. also a substantial cheque, these gifts accompanying oral appreciation of her journalistic work.
