THE WEATHER. After the dull and overcast conditions which prevailed on Sunday, the weather was warm and fine yesterday morning. A boisterous southerly wind sprang up at mid-day, and conditions remained threatening till the late afternoon, when the wind dropped and the sky cleared. TRIBUTE TO BANDSMEN. In connection with the recent New Zealand Bands' championship, at which the Geraldine District Band was a competitor in the B Grade section, the Mayor (Mr B. R. Macdonald) has received the following letter from Mr John H. Walker, chairman of the Dunedin Band Contest Society:— “On behalf of the Executive of the Dunedin Band Contest Society, allow me to convey to you our appreciation of the exemplary conduct of your local bandsmen while in our city during the late contest. Might I ask you to convey to the conductor and bandsmen our very sincere appreciation of their attendance, which contributed largely in making the contest an undoubted success, and assure you, on behalf of my Executive, and also the Mayor and citizens of Dunedin, of their extreme satisfaction, so fully expressed, of their conduct while in our city, and trust that on future occasions we will have their attendance, which will be looked forward to and appreciated by us all.” PERSONAL. Mrs J. u. McKechnie, “Ribbonwood,” Macdonald Street, is spending a holiday at Moeraki, North Otago. Miss Mary Lysaght, Raukapuka, who has returned from a visit to Mrs J. S. Connolly, Rakaia, will leave to-day for Ngapara (OarnaJu), where she will be Ihe guest of Mrs E. J. Conlon. Miss N. Burke (Rakaia), who has been the guest of Mrs Jas. Lysaght, Raukapuka, will leave to-day for Ngapara, to spend a holiday as the guest of Mrs E. J. Conlon. “MAID OP THE MOUNTAINS.” Frederick Lonsdale's British spectacular comedy-drama, “The Maid of the Mountains,” with Nancy Brown, a Sydney girl, in the title role, will head the programme at the Municipal Theatre to-night and to-morrow evening. No film, silent or sound, has been produced in England, which can boast of such spectacular splendour, delightful melodies, together with an all-star cast. Good supports will also be screened. NOTES. A meeting of ladies willing to assist with the Geraldine Poppy Day appeal, will be held in Mr J. Kennedy’s rooms to-morrow. A meeting of citizens will be held in the Town Hall on Friday evening to consider measures f<?r the relief of the unemployed. Large entries have been received for the Temuka and Geraldine A. and P. Association’s annual show at Winchester next Thursday. As is customary, the light horse section will be a particularly fine one, and the sheep and cattle sections should also arouse much interest. Adequate railway facilities have been arranged for the transport of patrons to and from the Show. Mr E. Cholerton, representing John R. Procter, Ltd., the Premier Opticians, of Christchurch, may be consulted on all defects of eyesight at the Crown Hotel, Geraldine, on Wednesday, the 29th March The Geraldine branch office of the “Herald" is situated in Wilson Street, the telephone number being 207. The representative at the branch is Mr M. Baker, to whom payment of accounts may be made, and all inquiries relating to advertising, printing or papers referred.
