NEWS AND NOTES

The weekly dance of the Timaru Fire Brigade was held on Saturday evening, and attracted a large attendance of patrons. The usual novelties were held. A special feature was provided by the Brigade, who turned out as for a general alarm. When the alarm was given, the doors swung open, the lights automatically went up and the alarm bell rang. The engine was manned and was outside the station in a few seconds, illustrating very forcibly that the Timaru Brigade takes second place to none in the Dominion. Superintendent P. Campbell explained the procedure, and the attention given to details to ensure that there was the minimum of delay. The firemen were accorded a hearty round of applause.

Those responsible for the organisation of sports meetings and similar functions are more and more inclined to insure against rain spoiling the fixture. A premium of £7 for a cover of £SO was paid in respect to an athletic and cycling meeting in Auckland. The club concerned insured against a fall of 10 points between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., but the rain which actually fell was so slight that the insurance company won. The Ngaruawahia Regatta Association paid a premium of £32 to an insurance company under an agreement by which the company agreed to pay the association £3OO if one-tenth of an inch of rain fell between 8 a.m. and noon on Saturdav, the day of the regatta. There was no rain in the morning, and so no insurance was collected. Light showers fell early in the afternoon.

A giant hydrangea has been grown by Mr D. L. Duncan, of Blenheim. The bloom measures 16 inches in diameter and roughly 3ft 65 in in circumference, and is carried on a strong stem lined with great leaves measuring up to 9 inches in length and 7s inches across. It is a magnificent head, of a good blue shade and uniform conformation.
