SURFACEMAN DIES OF INJURIES. By Telegraph—Press Association WAIPUKURAU. March 27. A fatal railway accident occurred on Saturday night when a jigger, on which was Edward John Groves, of Takapau, surfaceman (31) was struck by an engine running solo near Marakeke. eight miles south of Waipukurau. The first intimation received by the driver orf the engine. which was travelling tender first, with a fully lit lamp in front of the tender, was a peculiar grinding on the rails. He saw an object at the side and then stopped promptly. He, with the fireman, searched about the engine and line, and found the outrigger wheel of the Jigger, and subsequently on the track along the line an unconscious man. He was conveyed to the Waipukurau Hospital suffering from a fracture of thu base of the skull. He succumbed early yesterday morning. Groves was a single man, with rela, tives in Wellington.
