OTAGO V, SOUTH CANTERBURY. g The annual representative fixture g against Otago, played on the Logan | Park courts, Dunedin, resulted in a vie- H tory for the home team by 20 matches, | 42 sets and 307 games, to 4 matches, 11 | sets and 179 games. The two matches around which most | interest was centred were those in E which Miss D. Smythe, South Canter- § bury junior champion, defeated the E Otago lady champion, Mrs M. Patti- | son; and in which W. G. Robertson, I Timaru, defeated George Pearce, Dun- I edin. It was rather remarkable that, owing I to the inability of sevefal of the top I South Canterbury ladies to make the ■ trip, the first two lady players for the | visitors were the finalists in the recent H South Canterbury junior championship, | and were making their first appearance p against the southern province. The two other wins recorded by the | visitors were the result of very credit- H able performances. Miss M. Bridges | did very well to defeat a very promis- | ing young Otago player, Miss Helen 1 Cox, ex-South Island ladies’ doubles | champion, in straight sets; and G. C, I Reid and Mrs Cotter were the only ( successful mixed doubles pairs. I. Ma- I thieson aroused comment on account | of his hard-hit forehand drive. The j travellers were a very young team, H with the men practically at full I strength. The Otago doubles pairs all I had the long experience of each other’s | play. The visitors were very hospitably en- K tertained at various functions as the I guests of the Otago Lawn Tennis Asso- E ciation, the president of which body— I Dr. Moody—spared no pains to see that 1 there were no dull moments, Detailed results of the matches were | as follows (Otago names first):— | Men’s Singles.
