RIFLE SHOOTING

TIMARU DEFENCE CLUB. On Saturday afternoon the Timaru Defence Rifle Club fired the twentieth match of the season—an extra to decide the championship. The scores were added to the championship scores, the same as in the "King’s” at Trentham. The first prize was donated by a well-wisher. This match also counted for the bulls’ eye competition, and the B grade aggregate. The day came in wet, and up till one o’clock it looked as if there would be no shoot, but conditions became better, and shooting was commenced at about the usual time. The conditions were 10 shots and two optional counters at each of 800 and 900 yards, and the time limit was strictly enforced. At 800 the conditions were hard—bad light and an 8/10 sea wind which rose and fell quite enough to put off the target if one did not keep an eye on the flags. The best score at this range was put on by C. H. Johnson (46). and : the only 45 was put on by J. Healy. ' Johnson’s board read 4554551455—46; Healy’s 5454555543—45. At 900 the wind rose another 4 or 5 degrees, but was steadier, and there was better shooting. M. Healy and W. Duncan were on top with 48 each. Healy's board read 5545555455 —48. He did not find the target with his first sighter, but a big correction registered a four, which he also struck out, and he found the bull for the first business shot. Duncan struck the bull with the first sighter, and kept there till the eighth shot. His board read 5555555445—48. The next best score was W. E. Jones's 47. The match for the day was won by W. Duncan with 98. C. Paine was second with 93 and C. H. Johnson third with 92. The Gold Rifle was also won by W. Duncan, 91 off the rifle counting C. H. Johnson out with the same score. Very keen interest was taken in the final of the championship. The leading men were—W. E. Jones 645, M. Johnston 641. W. Bradshaw 638, C. Blackwood 636, W. Malcolm 631, and F. Black 628. At the end of the day W. E. Jones was still in the lead with 733 and M. Johnston was still second, but he lost another two points from Jones. He was unfortunate In getting a miss in his third last shot; his score was 627. W. Malcolm came up from sixth place to third, with 720. C. Blackwood still held fourth place with 717, and E. Brehaut moved up from seventh to fifth. W. Bradshaw, who was holding third place, went back to sixth. The B grade aggregate was won by E. Brehaut 627, C. Paine second (625), J. Green third (595), and L. Murray fourth (594). At the conclusion of the shoot the president announced the winners of the championship. He congratulated vice-president Jones on his fine win again for the championship, and called for cheers for the champion. He then congratulated the runner-up, M. Johnston, who was only a second year man, and said to come second in the championship was a credit to him. The following were the scores for

various unemployment schemes as occasion arises. Gold Prospecting The certifying officer said that he had received a number of inquiries from men in regard to gold prospecting. The position was that these men had to report to the certifying officer, Cromwell, who officiated for three counties. In this locality work on No. 5 scheme was entirely devoted to prospecting. Mr Dash said that he had had two unemployed men prospecting in the Hunter Hills, but they had finish.;;! work that day without finding even a trace of colour of gold. Tire speaker ADD WDAIMATE. had spent £SO of his own money in the hope of supplying work of a profitable nature to numbers of men. The men he had engaged had worked at the ordinary unemployed rates, and had tpiled interminably without making a strike. From reports received from time to time in the past from practical miners and experts, there was evidently a reef somewhere in the Hunter Hills, but to find jt was like looking for a needle in a haystack. General. In regard to the position of the Morven Maoris, the Committee decided that no relief work be granted until after the potato picking season The secretary was instructed to apply to the Waimate County Cour.cil to have the work of cleaning the Arno drain- put in hand at the earliest possible time.
