WHAT IS IT FOR?
WATER DISCHARGED FROM THE SIDE OF SHIPS
You must have wondered why there is generally a stream of water pouring out of the side of big ships.
Fresh water is difficult to obtain at sea and has to be used sparingly, so after it has been turned to steam in the boilers and has done its work in the engines it is condensed back into water again.
This is done by circulating cold sea water in tubes through it and the stream that you see issuing from the side of the ship is this water being discharged after /■ has passed through the condenser.
