WIND AT WINGATUI. By Telegraph—Press Association DUNEDIN, December 23. A strong gale ’was against fast times at Wingatui this morning, this being partially why so few horses were sent against the watch. Nightly had Night Lad for a companion over half a mile on the course proper, the pair running 54sec. Princess Argosy was the only one of Gieseler's team to gallop, and she ran half a mile, the last three furlongs against the wind, in 43sec. Water Power jumped off from the mile post on the tan track and ran three furlongs, from the seven to four furlongs’ posf, in 36sec. She was then joined by Brown Pearl, and ran the last half-mile in 53 l-ssec. It was a pleasing gallop. The only other gallop of importance was that recorded by Fair Exchange, who ran a mile on the tan in 1.47. All the other locally-trained horses engaged at the meeting were given from half-pace to strong work on the plough.

RAIN INTERRUPTS WORK AT AUCKLAND. By Telegraph—Press Association AUCKLAND, December 23. The weather was fine for training at Ellerslie before breakfast but after the interval steady rain set in. However, it was an off morning, and there was little doing. The rain will certainly improve the going, for the ground was very hard after the long dry spell. The No. 3 grass track was available and Fast Passage was worked once round, running the last three furlongs in 39sec. Princess Doreen sprinted three in 38 2-ssec, and pulled up well. She is in first-class condition. Guarantee strode over six furlongs in 1.26 2-5, the last three in 40sec. All other visiting horses did pacework on the sand and tan tracks. Silver Ring, who arrived yesterday was allotted strong pace work, moving very freely. He is to contest the Railway Handicap and the Derby. Gold Trail was also out, doing useful exercise. Her knee is still slightly enlarged but does not appear to affect her. Blacksmith was schooled over a couple of hurdles, showing slight improvement on yesterday. Carfex, High Pitch and King’s Archer have arrived. AWAPUNI NOTES. By Telegrabti—s»ress Association PALMERSTON N.. Dec. 23. Operations at Awapuni this morning were restricted to easy work on the plough. The only gallop was when the two-year-old Safari (Reed), who displayed disappointing form yesterday, sprinted across the top and went much better in the straight run from the six furlongs to the three furlongs post, running the distance in 38 2-ssec. Not a single visitor was on the tracks, but M. Carroll is expected from the north to-day.

The tracks are hard and fast, but rain, which would be beneficial, is threatening.

Red Heckle’s northern trip has been abandoned.

All Supreme was scratched yesterday for all engagements at Ellerslie. Imamint was scratched for the Robinson Handicap.

P. T. Hogan has taken five horses to Wingatui, for the southern meetings. They are Water Power, Brown Pearl, Night Lad, Fair Exchange and Nightly (a two-year-old by Nightraid from Miss Muriel).

Although Cricket Bat was accepted for in the Christmas Handicap, on the first day of the Auckland meeting, he may not be a starter. He was left in the race in case it was decided not to start Silver Scorn, but if the unbeaten three-year-old filly is in the field, it is probable that Cricket Bat will be reserved for the second day. The death occurred at Oamaru on Thursday after a long illness of Mr Malcolm Allan. The deceased was born in Dunedin. At the age of 10 years he became a jockey, and later became associated with racing for nearly half a century. In 1881 he won the Great Autumn on the Hon. George McLean's Lady Eunice, and the following year won a treble at the Dunedin Cup meeting on the same mount. His first race over hurdles was at Oamaru, over the old steeplechase course. He later rode and drove trotters with consistent success, the last winner he rode being at Oamaru in 1913. Mr Allan owned several well-known racehorses, including Boldrewood, Fischu, Premier, Bribery and Bell Metal. For some years Mr Allan resided at Palmerston, and while there was a member of the Borough Council. He later went to Dunedin and Mosgiel, and in 1914 farmed a settlement on the Kauru estate. About five years ago he settled at Oamaru.
