A successful entertainment, with cards and dancing, was arranged by the Committee of the Freezing Workers, at the Wentworth Hall on Wednesday evening, a large crowd being present. The following. prizes were allocated: — Mr F. Ward, Christmas cake; Mr H. W. Latter, potatoes; Mr McNicholl. Other prize-winners were:—Mr G. Deller, Mr Neilson, Mr J. An ex-Aucklander now resident in Fiji writes to a friend stating that on the sugar cane plantations there has been a record crop this year, and people are looking forward to a very busy time when the mills start crushing (says the “Auckland Star”). Incidentally, he adds that there has been a gold strike in Fiji, which is rumoured to rival Kimberley, Kalgoorlie, and Yukon in richness. If the strike proved to be anything equal to the glowing reports, stated the correspondent in facetious vein, he proposed taking out a publican’s license, imparting a few nice girls from Auckland for the bar trade when the gold l ush set in, and making enough money to retire in two or three years.

In order to cater for the large number of visitors in Timaru over the holiday period, it has been decided to open an open air dance hall, in the centre of the town, in premises lately used as a skating rink. The management have engaged the Coconut Grove Mel-ody-Makers Dance Band. This band of six dance musicians have mads themselves popular throughout the South Island, having just completed a successful tour. Dancers will have the benefit of dancing on a specially prepared floor. Tradesmen have been busy building a stand to accommodate the band, and finishing the floor. Beautiful decorations, lighting and attractions each evening, should make the Palm Beach Dance Hall one of the most popular places of entertainment in the holiday season. A record crowd is expected at the opening on Monday night.

In view of the continued good patronage afforded Saturday night dances, the management has decided to hold a Carnival dance in the Bay Tea Rooms to-night

The Timaru Muncipal Band willlplay carols through the town to-morrow morning, and will give a concert on the Bay in the evening at 8.15.
