NEWS AND NOTES

H. Allchurch and Co. will hold a Christmas poultry sale to-day, also new and second-hand furniture, a few travellers’ samples, etc. “As was only expected in view of the times, the demand for dried fruit for Christmas cooking this year has not been up to that of last year.” remarked a representative of one of the Gisborne wholesale firms. The majority of the business in these lines, he explained, was conducted by wholesalers during October and November, and the demand could be fairly accurately estimated now. In the case of his firm and he thought it applied generally, stocks had been kept down to a bare minimum as it was evident that people were now spending considerably less on food requirements for the festive season. “You know what a big task it was to get in the harvest in the old days, when men were workers, so how much more of a problem will be the present harvest, which is bigger than ever, when we realise that men are being taught not to work?” declared a member of the Ashburton County Council, when the question of the employment of harvesters was discussed. Potentially, the fire menace during the dry weather of the present summer will be greater than ever as there has been a tremendous growth of grass in Ashburton County, where at least one grass fire has been caused by a railway locomotive. Reference to this outbreak, which occurred at Hinds a few days ago, was made at a County Council meeting, when the huge cinders which started the fire after falling from the engine of a goods train were exhibited. The Council decided to draw the attention of the Railway Department to the gross carelessness of the engine crew in slowing such large pieces of burning coal to escape from the engine. In explaining to the New Plymouth Rotary Club that few Maoris in the old days ever suffered from dental trouble, Rotarian (Dr.) George Home instanced the case of a Maori at Okato who had a swelling in his neck arising from sepsis in a tooth. The doctor told him that he would require to have the offending molar out before he would be rid of the trouble, so he produced his forceps! This was too much for the Maori; he did not like the idea of the instrument being inserted in his mouth. Thereupon, the doctor said he would lance his neck instead. The Maori readily acquiesced, and stood up while the operation was performed and unflinchingly bore the pain involved, after which he nonchalantly invited the doctor into the hotel to take liquid refreshment with him!
