RENNET FAMINE
OVER-EXPORTATION. THREATENS CHEESE-MAKING. By Telegraph—Pres* Association ELTHAM, December 22. The cheese industry of New Zealand is threatened with a serious holdup through the shortage of rennet supplies. Dairy companies throughout Taranaki have received a circular from Wellington to the effect that owing to the export of the Dominion’s available supply of veils, there is now no raw material In the country to manufacture the rennet necessary to cope with the extra output of cheese. This acute shortage was forshadowed some months ago both by the New Zealand Co-operative Rennet Co. and by a deputation from dairying interests to Cabinet Ministers, when it was pointed out that it was essential that all veils should remain in the country. No action was taken by the Cabinet, and consequently veils sufficient for half a year's output of cheese were exported by overseas meat interests.
It is understood that foreign rennet is being hurried to New Zealand, but it is questionable whether it will arrive in time.
