FAIRLIE
FIRE BRIGADE The twenty-fourth annual meeting of the Fan-lie Volunteer Fire Brigade was held on Tuesday. Captain W. Close presided over a good attendance of firemen. The balance sheet, which was read by the secretary (Fireman Caskey) showed a credit balance of £45, an increase of £2 during the year. This was considered very satisfactory. Captain Close reported that during the year there had been two alarms and four fires. Three of the fires were in chimneys, while one was located in the railway furnace shed. Mrs Tanner’s house in the Reserve had been completely destroyed, but no alarm had been given. During the fire at the railway furnace shed it was found that the engine would not start. Several adjustments mere made, and no more trouble had been experienced. During the year a chemical extinguisher had been purchased, and was attached to the engine. The extinguisher was used at a chimney fire, and worked in a satisfactory manner. The annual dance had been a success both socially and financially.. It had been decided to get details of the cost of badges and certificates to be issued to those members entitled to same, and it was hoped to have these during the coming year. In conclusion, Captain Close thanked all the firemen for the way they had helped by attending meetings and practices. There were four members in the Brigade who had now completed twenty-five years of service, and were entitled to receive their decoration, which he hoped would be procured this year. The following officers were re-elected for the ensuing year:—Captain, W. Close; lieutenant, H. Welsh; secretary, J. Caskey; foreman, S. Ryder, branchmen, C. Pinkerton and W. Surridge; assistant branchnien, H. Foden and B. Slow. After the meeting a social hour was spent, refreshments being served.
