SOUTH SCHOOL
MEETING OF COMMITTEE. At the monthly meeting of the South School Committee last night, Mr W. J. Dickson presided over the following members—Messrs H. J. Brewer, T. G. Jacobs. W. W. Green, r\ E. Stewart. A. Wyatt, and F. C. Earl. The Canterbury Educatioji Board wrote inquiring what the Committee’s intentions were regarding a proposal \to convert the old building into an assembly hall. The chairman said that, while they would all recognise that the proposal was a good one, at the present time he did not think the project could be financed. The chances of raising money by an art union were negligible. The Board apparently wanted a definite indication of what the Committee was going to do. It was agreed to advise the Board that, owing to lack of finance, the idea of carrying out the conversion had been abandoned. It was decided to confirm the Board’s recommendation to appoint Miss T. O. Ferguson to the position of assistant mistress at the school. The headmaster (Mr F. J. Mottram) reported that during the month the attendance had been good, although the lower classes had been affected somewhat by chickenpox and whooping cough. The average attendance was 435. or 92.5 per cent. The annual proficient examination was held on November 21st, but the results were not yet to hand. The final term examinations were practically completed. The headmaster extended, on behalf of the staff, seasonal greetings to the Committee. The report was adopted. It was decided that the break-up ceremony be conducted on similar lines to those of last year’s function, separate functions to be held in the afternoon for the infants and standards 1 and 2, the senior ceremony being held at the school in the evening. It was decided to ask the Rev. ' Clyde Carr, M.P., to speak at the even- * ing ceremony. Accounts amounting to £ll 16s were
passed ior payment. As the meeting was the last of the year the chairman extended seasonal greetings to members of the CommitI tee. the headmaster and staff and to the Press.
