NEW ZEALAND DEFENCE FORCE: PRACTICAL MILITARY FIELD WORK

As part of the modern training system, a cable wagon detachment of the Corps of Signals from the New Zealand Permanent Force Training; Cadre stationed at Trentham, recently laid approximately five miles of road ground cable in the Moonshine district. The field cable system is used to provide rapid means of telephonic communication- The trainee wore full fighting kit. (1) The base, showing operator in constant communication with cable waggon. (3) The cable waggon in action. A cible is laid at the rate of three miles an hour, and a mounted trooper rides behind and guides the cable nto position. (2) The telephone operator on the cable waggon keeps continually in touch with the base. (4) Erecting an overhead cable at a road intersection. This operation takes only a few minutes. Each cable waggon is equipped with ten miles of cable on drums holding two miles each.
