Mr W. R. E. Stephenson, 8.A., of the Otago University, and an old boy of the Timaru Boys’ High School, was last week awarded the 1933-34 Ross Fellowship, from five candidates, by the Council of Knox College.

The Governor-General, Lord Bledisloe, and her Excellency Lady isledisloe have acceded to the request of the New Zealand Red Cross Society that they become patron and patroness respectively of the Society. Her Excellency has also accepted the office of patroness of the New Zealand Junior Red Cross Society.

At a meeting of the Timaru—St. Andrews branch of the Farmers’ Union yesterday afternoon, the chairman (Mr W. J. Black) referred to the death of Mr G. L. Twenty man. who had been a foundation member of the Union, 24 years ago. Reference was also made to the death of Mr A. H. Abbott and to bereavement suffered by Mr J. J. Dickson in the loss of a brother. Motions of sympathy with relatives were carried in the usual manner. The long and valuable service rendered to the Levels County Council by Mr F. E. Whitehead, who has retired from the position of county clerk, was mentioned at yesterday’s meeting of the Mackenzie County Council by the chairman (Mr C. J. Talbot). The chairman added that there was close cooperation between counties in South Canterbury, and the officers were a kind of brotherhood. They would all regret Mr Whitehead’s retireruenr and sympathise with him in his illness. Mr Talbot congratulated Miss H. Allan on her appointment to fill the vacancy. Miss Allan was one of the few women county clerks in New Zealand, and was assistant-clerk to Mackenzie County where she received valuable experience as assistant to Mr Jeune.
