AMERICA’S WITTIEST MAN.

Mr. Oliver Herford is held to be “the wittiest man in America.” His amusing squib. “The Deb’s Dictionary,” may appeal less to Engl sh than American readers, but there are definitions in it that make the whole world kin. “Ambidextrous” means “not letting your right hand know who is holding your left hand”’ and “Amiability” is “a semi-precious virtue.” A “Daub” is defined as “the portrait of a woman you hate by a painter who has never asked you to sit for him;” and “Heel” as “woman’s sole remaining pedestal.” To define a “Jewel" as “a cook during her first week cf por employ” is cruelly exact. A Mystery is “how she does it on that salary;’ and a Paddock is “an outdoor enclosure where thoroughbreds receive common people.”
