FARMERS’ UNION NOTES

RALLY AT SOUTIIBURN. A large gathering of local residents was present in the Southburn School on Wednesday of last week when the Timaru-St.Andrew’s Branch of , the Union and the previous division spent an enjoyable evening. Mr. W. J. Black presided, and after outlining the object of the gathering introduced the president of the Local Executive, Mr. P. R. Talbot, who explained the aims and desires of the Farmers’ Union in a short address. Mrs. B. E. Evans, president of the Timaru Branch of the Women’s Division spoke on the work of the Division throughout the Dominion, pointing out the advantages of membership to country women, and Mr. A Crosbie also gave a short talk on Farmers Mutural Fire Insurance. Mr. J. C. Hay, president of Waimate Branch, gave an interesting address on the need of unity of activity on the part of all primary producers and the necessity of their whole-heartedly supporting their own organisations. He also indicated the scope of work which the Union was tacking at the moment and that much good would be accomplished if farmers co-operated in spirit and practice. Music and elocutionary items were presented by Misses Arnold, Kelly and Evans and Messrs Chamberlain and Caldwell, and supper was supplied by the Women’s Division. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to the various contributors to the evening’s enjoyment and to the Women’s Division for supper. A short dance completed the evening.
