WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

TESCHEMAKERS’ BRANCH. The monthly meeting oft the Teschemakers’ Women’s Institute was held in the school on Wednesday afternoon. In spite of the unpleasant weather conditions, there was quite a good attendance of members, Mrs H. Mills presiding. Correspondence referring to the proposed Women’s Institute depot in Timaru was discussed.—Members agreed that this should prove a boon to country women in many ways. The secretary was asked to write to the treasurer, Miss Bayliss, conveying the sympathy of members with her in her sudden severe illness. An interesting demonstration on the making of raffia trays was given by Mrs A. Maxwell, to whom a hearty vote of thanks was proposed by Mrs Les. Henderson and seconded by Miss Kirk. It was hoped that, as a result of this lesson, many pretty raffia sandwich trays, will be in evidence at the forthcoming birthday party supper. A competition for the prettiest and cheapest cushion cover was won by Mrs A. Maxwell and Miss G. Morris, equal. Both winning cushions were worked ift the new raised wool embroidery, the first mentioned one being filled with raw wool. All members are urged to bring something, i.e., produce, needlework, cookery, arts and crafts, etc., to sell on the bring and buy table at each meeting. Afternoon tea was served, the hostesses being Mesdames Mills and Powell, with the Misses O’Boyle. The roll call took the form of suggestions for the birthday party to be held next month. It was decided to hold the meeting in the evening. An invitation to members to attend the Hunter Women’s Institute birthday pary next Wednesday was received.
