An attempt w’as also made to enter the store, but whether the intruder found himself unable to unfasten the patent catch, or was interrupted in his attempt, entry was not gained. LATE MRS GUDEX. | The late Mrs Jane Gudex, who died > in Temuka recently, at the age of 76 i years, was born in 1856 at Newtonards. i County Down, Ireland. She came to New Zealand in 1880 in the “Elizabeth Graham.” the trip lasting 122 days. She first lived in Temuka, and later went to Raincliffe to keep house for her brother, William McCully. In 1884 she married Michael Gudex, farmer, Raincliffe. They retired to Timaru in 1903, but in 1910 back to farm life, this time at Milford. : For the last few years of her life, the deceased lived in Allnutt Street. Temuka, and her kindly and cheery • nature endeared her to all with whom ; she came in contact. She w r as a I member of the Presbyterian Church ! and of the Women’s Division of the ! Farmers’ Union. The following is the draw for Thursday : Senior. Pleasant Point v. Temuka Y.W. St. Joseph’s v. Winchester. Clandeboye. a bye. Junior. St. Joseph's v. Temuka B. Clandeboye v. Temuka A. Milford v. Seadown. Pleasant Point v. Maori Girls GENERAL NEWS. This year's second heaviest frost, nine degrees, was registered in Temuka yesterday morning. Temuka's womenfolk appear to have fallen for the knitting craze. Knitting seems to be the chief “time filler” of young and old just now. and in consequence business people have experienced increased sales in wools of all colours. During the past few weeks more than one party of Temuka’s young men have set out to try their luck 1 at gold prospecting, in various parts.

ALL-BRITISH COMEDY. , Excellent fare in the form of broad comedy, on traditional music-hall lines, is being provided at Temuka tonight. when “P. C. Josser” is being shown. The humour of Ernie Lotinga. who plays the title role, is of the oldfashioned type, which has everything to commend it. The picture is an adaptation of one of Lotinga’s famous sketches, and has been cleverly elaborated for the screen. There is a joyous enthusiasm about Lotinga's impersonation of the incompetent police constable which is infectious. Humanity owes much to laughtermakers of this type. His broad humour tells every time. The whole picture is excellent fun and there must be something wrong with anyone who can see it without laughing. In addition to the usual supports, a sound film entitled “Phar Lap” should appeal to all. It shows the running of the Agua Caliente race from start to finish; also short talks about the wonder horse.
