WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

HINDS BRANCH. Members of the Women's Institute walked out to meet Miss Esther James on Saturday afternoon at the Hinds Bridge, and escorted her into the township. In the evening she was entertained by the institute in the hall. The Rev. B. Tayler greeted Miss James in Maori. Misses McGuigan (Ealing), sang the Institute Song. Mrs W. P. Hockley played a pianoforte solo, the Misses Taylor sang Maori action songs and Miss M. McKeage and Miss A. Frampton played a pianoforte duet. Miss K. Johnston (Lowcliffe) sang a song. Miss M. Johnston (Mayfield), gave a pianoforte solo. Miss Jeannace Tarbotton presented Miss James with a pretty bouquet. The respective presidents of the Institutes at Hinds (Mrs Turner). Ealing (Mrs Davis). Arundel (Mrs Pithie), and Mayfield (Mrs Austin) welcomed Miss James, who is walking through the Dominion advertising New Zealand goods. Miss James gave a short but interesting address on her tour, relating many humorous experiences. She has already travelled 1200 miles and by the time she reaches the Bluff will have walked 1600 miles. The book which Miss James carries with her on her travels, made of New Zealand wood pulp, was signed by the postmaster (Mr Middlemass) and then passed round for residents to sign. While supper was being prepared. Mrs Middlemass led in community singing. Miss James was the guest of Mrs Middlemass. j SEADOWN BRANCH. The Seadown Women’s Institute held their monthly meeting in the School on Saturday, the president (Mrs F. Smith) presiding. The meeting opened with the Institute Song. Mrs K. Hunt playing the accompaniment. A roll call. “The Uses of Lemons,” brought forth many good suggestions. Two competitions were held, and resulted —Jam sponge. Mrs Pemberton 1, Mrs Hewson 2. Three eggs: Mrs Jackson 1, Miss Cain 2. Two members, Mrs J. Edgar and Miss Cain, gave a very interesting demonstration on "tatting,” which was keenly followed by the members present. The exchange table did a brisk business. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Hughes. Jackson, Clark, and Pemberton, and two amusing items provided by these hostesses helped to brighten a very enjoyable meeting. A hearty vote of thanks to the demonstrators and to the hostesses was proposed by Mrs McCully, and carried by acclamation. The meeting closed with the singing of the National Anthem. WASHDYKE BRANCH. The monthly meeting of the Washdyke Institute was held on May 12th. Owing to the indisposition of the president (Mrs Glenday). the vicepresident (Mrs Doak> presided over an attendance of 36. Following the opening by the Institute Song, an interesting demonstration on rag mat-making was given by Mrs Burrell. The winners of competitions were: Butter. Miss H. Stocker 1. Mrs Brown 2. Bottled fruit—Mrs Henderson 1. Mrs L. Stocker 2. The roll call. “Household Hints.” brought forward many good suggestions. The hostesses were Mesdames Wilson, Watt. Taylor. Seyb. Miss Taylor and Miss Stocker. The meeting was brought to a close with the singing of the new Institute Song, and God Save the King.

IKAWAI BRANCH. The monthly meeting of the Ikawai Women’s Institute was held in the school on Thursday last, when Mrs Finlay Mcßae presided over an attendance of 21 members. The meeting opened with the singing of the Institute Song, which was followed by the roll call, most useful kitchen utensil. It was decided to have a sales table at the June meeting, and Miss Milne was appointed to take charge. After discussion it was decided to send 41b of butter to the Institute link in England. During the afternoon Miss Brown gave an interesting demonstration on marquetry. In a competition for best w’orked apron, Mrs Finlay Mcßae and Miss W. Brown tied for first place, and Miss Milne and Miss L. Wall equal third. A potato competition was won by Mrs Hamilton with 161bs. and Miss Jean Hamilton second with lllbs. Afternoon tea was handed round by the hostesses. Mesdames Balfour and Bell, and Miss Brown.
