The authorities will continue the precautions to-morrow. CLASH WITH VATICAN. REPUBLICAN POLICY HOTLY DENOUNCED. The Madrid correspondent of the “Times” reported recently that the Roman Catholic newspapers say the expulsion of the Jesuits is ridiculous and should not be allowed. The decision against education they call a barbarous crime against culture. The Cortes passed a clause in the Constitution permitting liberty of conscience and the free practice of religion, but suppressing the Holy Week ceremonies at Seville and the Pillar Week at Saragossa, which are famous throughout the Roman Catholic world. The new Spanish Cabinet issued a decree forbidding religious orders to abandon the work of teaching under penalty of the forfeiture of their property. At the same time the Cabinet deleted from the Budget the teaching and cultural grant to the Church. The possibility of a rupture between the Vatican and Spain, if further measures against the Church are adopted, is being discussed in authoritative quarters in Rome. The Vatican is shocked at the unexpected passage of the article in the Constitution permitting the dissolution of religious bodies and the confiscation of their property. A subsequent message from Madrid stated that the Papal Nuncio, Monsignor Tedeschini who had an interview with the Premier (Senor Azana), as a result of which it is hoped that the relations between the Church and the State may be satisfactorily solved, remarked: “The Cfiurch may be wounded, but it is never hostile.”
