MINIATURE RIFLE CLUB. The weekly shoot for a club trophy took place on Monday evening, when there was a good attendance of members. Tire winner after four rounds, was G. Smith, with M. Wilks 70; P. Simmons 70; W. Crawford 69, 62; J. Cunningham 69. TOWN BOARD. The regular monthly meeting of the Town Board was held on Tuesday night. There were present: Commissioners Gea. Saunders, H. Blissett, H. Elms, C. Borrell, A. H. Roberts, T. Kelliher and M. F. Maze (chairman). The Health Officer reported that no cases of infectious disease had been notified during the month ended March 31, in the Town Board area. The secretary of the South Canterbury Hospital Board wrote informing ;he Board that their levy had been reduced by £ls for the year. A statement of levies was enclosed. The Town Clerk, Timaru Borough, forwarded the Board’s proportion of heavy traffic license fees collected,, amounting to £24 11s. The Treasury, Wellington, forwarded a receipt for £Bl 9s 7d, the amount collected in the township for the Hawke’s Bay Earthquake Relief Fund. The District Public Trustee wrote inquiring the total collections, and other information, regarding the Hawke’s Bay Earthquake Relief Fund. —The clerk to forward particulars. The Miniature Rifle Club wrote inquiring if a reduction could be made in hall charges for the present season.— It was decided to reduce the nightly charge to 10/-, provided the hall Is vacated by 11 p.m. Mi- P. J. Bowman forwarded a schedule of charges for Insurance cover on Fire Brigade members. Mr J. W. Hill, wrote stating that he was placing a “talkie” plant on the road hi tire near future. He offered 30/- per night for the sole right, with the offer of 25/- per night for a second screening, per week, for the use of the Town Hall. He also inquired if the Board would consider a lease for 12 months, with right of renewal.—lt was agreed to accept Mr Hill’s terms for a term of 12 months. An application to drain Into the creek was received from a ratepayer. — It was decided to reply that this was contrary to the present by-laws. A complaint from Mr A. L. Thoreau strongly criticising the Board’s management of the Town Hall, was received. The Works Committee was appointed an Unemployment Committee to meet the Central Committee. The Commissioner of Transport wrote forwarding particulars regarding motor drivers’ licenses, under the new regulations. Mr J. A. Smith was appointed local examiner for drivers’ licenses. The road foreman’s report was read and adopted, and the sanitary man’s report was read and approved. The road ranger’s and hall caretaker’s report were adopted. Accounts amounting to. £193 6s were passed for payment, including South Canterbury Electric Power Board, quarterly street lighting charge £27 ss; wages £42; Hospital Board, quarterly levy £l9 5s 8d; horse feed £ll 6s 6d; and unemployed relief wages £6O 12s. Sitting as a Domain Board, an application was received from the Ladies’ Basketball Club for the use of the Domain for games for the year.—Granted. HOUSEHALDERS’ MEETING. There was an attendance of only 22 householders at the District High School. Mr W. B. Obom was voted to the chair. The secretary (Mr G. W. Wakefield), read the report, which showed that the primary roll number was 163. The secondary department roll of 52, was the highest in the school's history. The report touched on the matter of consolidation, which, it tvas anticipated, might become an established fact within the next few months, as most of the surrounding schools were much in favour of it. The Dental Clinic, under the very capable direction of Nurse Armstrong, was maintaining an excellent service, and was greatly appreciated by parents. The report mentioned that prizes would not be awarded at this year’s break-up ceremony, unless the Intention of the outgoing Committee was reversed. Tire amount raised locally for school purposes Was £lO3 for the year. School games had been well catered for, and both girls’ and boys’ teams had acquitted themselves well in the various matches played. The balance sheet showed a very satisfactory credit balance of over £2O. The adoption of the report and bal-ance-sheet was moved by Mr W. B. Oborn, and seconded by Mr A. G. Crossman, who praised the Committee for an excellent year’s work. Mr Alec Chisholm protested against the proposal in the report, to do away with school prizes. He moved an amendment: “That the clause be deleted from the report.” Mr W. Barker seconded this, with a view of getting an expression of opinion from the meeting. The amendment was defeated by 17 votes to 3, and the adoption of the report was thereupon carried. On the motion of Mr Chisholm, seconded by Mr Crossman, a hearty vote of thanks was accorded to the staff. Mrs de Montalk moved, and Mrs Taylor seconded, a vote of thanks to the Committee, which was unanimously carried. A vote of thanks was also accorded to the Revs. Messrs McNeur and Oldham for conducting the weekly Bible lessons at the school. A discussion took place regarding the date of the school picnic. Mr Barker moved:—"That it be a recommendation to the Committee to hold the picnic on break-up day.” This was seconded by Mrs Chisholm and carried unanimously. A suggestion by Mr Crossman that the picnic be held at Fairlie or Waimate, was referred to the incoming committee. From eight nominations, the following committee was elected: —Mrs M. Arnott, Mr W. Halkett, Mrs W. Taylor, Mr G. W. Wakefield, Mr F. Popplewell, Mr W. B. Oborn, and Mr A. S. Watson. At a subsequent committee meeting, Mr W. B. Oborn was re-elected chairman; Mrs Arnott treasurer; and Mr G. W. Wakefield secretary. Mrs Taylor was appointed visitor for the month. Meeting nights were fixed for the second Monday in the month.
