APPROACHING ELECTIONS. From present indications there will be at least one retirement from the Borough Council this year at the time of the municipal elections and there is a possibility of a Mayoral election. Approached yesterday by a representative of the “Timaru Herald,” the j Mayor (Mr J. Kennedy) and Coun- | clllors J. R. Lack (deputy-Maycr), E. jH. Logan, and A. J. Bell intimated that in all probability they will be standing for re-election. Councillors C. C. Bennett and J. W Miller stated that they had not yet made up their minds as to whether they would be offering themselves for re-election, and Councillor W. A. Sherratt said he would not stand. Approached concerning rumours that he would stand for either the Mayoralty or Council, Mr B. R. Macdonald said he had no comment to make. He had been approached, but had not yet made up his mind in the matter. GAPES VALLEY WOMEN’S INSTITUTE. The Gapes Valley Women’s Institute celebrated its first birthday at the monthly meeting, when Mrs Roberts presided over a good attendance. The resignation of Mrs Hibbs from the post of secretary was received with regret, and opportunity was taken to present her with a bouquet as a mark of appreciation for her past services. Mis Ruth Barker was appointed secretary. The prizes for the most points in the competitions for the past year was won by Mrs Knubley with Mrs P. Barker and Mrs Mackenzie second equal, and the prize for the most points gained by a single member was won by Miss R. Barker with Miss Rema Reid ondHome industry competitions were a feature of the meeting, and they produced an excellent display, the winners were:—Vegetables, Mesdames A. Haywood 1, A. H. Robert 2, R. Mis L. Maxwell was warmly applauded for a well-rendered violin solo, and the Misses Reid gave an amusing dialogue which was greatly appreciated. Two amusing competitions, which were enjoyed by all, were won by Mrs Masefield and Miss Macdonald. The singing of the National Anthem brought an enjoyable afternoon to a close.

The hostesses were Mesdames Talbot, Sey and Misses Drogowaller and Parr. FIRE BRIGADE DANCE. A “first of the season” ball was held ih the Town Hall on Thursday night by members of the Geraldine Volunteer Fire Brigade. The dance was capably organised, and the hall was well filled with dancers, including a number of visitors. Music was supplied by a Timaru orchestra, and extras were played by Mr J. Callanan. Mr F. A CLOSE CONTEST. In a friendly “A” Grade croquet match with Timaru, played at Geraldine on Thursday, the result was virtually a draw, Geraldine winning five games and Timaru five games, with two unfinished games at even scores.
