SEQUEL TO CYCLIST’S DEATH. INQUEST OPENED YESTERDAY. An inquest touching the death of Vera Goodeve, sixteen years of age, who died on Wednesday afternoon following injuries received as a result of being knocked off her cycle on the Main North Highway by a car driven by Mr David Bell, of Carew, was opened yesterday afternoon before a coroner (Mr J. Kennedy), and a jury of four —Messrs J. R. Lack (foreman), D. Macdonald, J. Gresham and A. J. Bell. After the jury had been sworn in an adjournment was made to view the body. On resumption of the inquest, John Roland Goodeve, who resides with ins mother in Talbot Street, gave evidence of identification. He had last seen his sister alive on Saturday afternoon at 2.30, when she left to visit her sister, Mrs J. Waller, at Cooper’s Creek. She was riding a cycle and was in the best of health and spirits when she left home. Witness had next, seen his sister in the Braeside Hospital in an unconscious condition at about eight o'clock on the same evening. Constable D. The monthly meeting of the Geraldine Women’s Institute was held in the Masonic Hall on Tuesday evening, Mrs A. P. Barklie presiding over a fair attendance. An entertaining address was given by Mrs M. Burdon on her travels through Europe, and those present accorded the speaker a hearty vote of thanks. During the evening the Social Committee organised a competition, which was won by Miss V. Turner. It was decided to hold further meetings in the Oddfellows’ Hall. GENERAL NEWS. Twenty-nine points of rain were recorded in Geraldine by Mr B. R. Macdonald, “Waitui,” for the twentyfour hours ended yesterday at 9 a.m. The cricket match between Saturday and Thursday teams arranged for yesterday was abandoned. A successful first of the season ball was held in the Town Hall last evening by members of the Geraldine Volunteer Fire Brigade.
