Conditions were excellent for the opening of the Canterbury Jbckey Club’s Easter meeting—bright sunshine, a light easterly breeze, and a fast track. Golden Wings, who had arrived from the north only on the morning of the race, scored a very easy win in the Champagne Stakes, taking sole charge before a furlong had been covered and thereafter never being challenged. The Great Easser resulted in a fine race between three South Islanders—Charmeuse, Great Star and Mount Boa—the first-named fully justifying her trainer’s high opinion of her. Black Duke won the Sockbum Handicap decisively.

Amorist was a surprise withdrawal from the Kildare Hurdles, and with Carinthia on the burly side backers sent Antrim Boy out a pronounced favourite. Pangolin and Aberfeldy soon took charge, and they raced to the second hurdle opposite the stand, about eight lengths clear of Antrim Boy. The favourite picked up some ground at the hurdle at Cutts’s and where Pangolin had drawn out from Aberfeldy, and he gained more at the nine furlongs. Going to the mile post Antrim Boy joined Pangolin, and at the far turn he took sole charge. The order at the top was Antrim Boy, Aberfeldy, Pangolin, with Oriflamb and Carinthia a long way back. Aberfeldy crashed at the last hurdle, leaving Antrim Boy to win by a dozen lengths from Pangolin, who was five lengths in front of Oriflamb. Carinthia was three lengths further back. I. Tilson received a nasty fall when Aberfeldy came down. Cricket Bat was the early (and public) favourite for the Champagne, but the bigger and later bettors sent Golden Wings out 180 units in more demand than the Chokebore colt. From a quick and even despatch, Esteem showed momentarily in front, but Golden Wings quickly assumed command and led to the main course from Cricket Bat and Fair Weather, with Esteem heading the next- division. Golden Wings was never troubled and won comfortably by three lengths from Cricket Bat, who beat Fair Weather by half a length. Esteem was a head away, fourth, with Last March next. Golden Wings is not engaged in the Challenge Stakes, and with a maiden allowance, Cricket Bat looks to have the best prospects of the two-year-olds in Tuesday’s seven furlongs race. In the possible absence of Nightmarch, Cricket Bat may be favourite.

Air Laddie and Juniper stood out from the others in the betting on the Autumn Plate (handicap), for which there were fifteen starters. Shatter and Invictus broke through the tapes before the start, but when the barrier was raised Invictus, along with Punchestown and Decisive, got off badly. Night Recital was first to show out from Adelphi and Royal Amphora. At the end of two furlongs the leading division comprised Night recital. Adelphi, Royal Amphora and Juniper. Night Recital and Adelphi led to the straight from Royal Amphora. Sharp Thorn, Juniper and The Bailiff, but at the distance Sharp Thorn forged to the front, and

answering gamely to a strong challenge on the inside from Juniper, the Clifford cast-off won by a neck. The Bailiff was a length and a half away, a length in front of Shatter. Air Laddie and Night Recital were next. The winner was purchased a few weeks ago by Mr W. Norman from Sir Charles Clifford. Juniper made a good showing and looks as if he might stay, but Air Laddie never threatened danger. Chief Cook was backed down to evens for the Russley Plate, showing more than twice as much money as the Zee-brugge-Boundary Hit bracket, which was about 150 chances in better demand than Idolise. Waiwene and Idolise (who was sent to the outside) were among the early leaders, and when the field reached the course proper Waiwene, Idolise and Gallant Fox were in the van, with Chief Cook and Azalea not far away. Gallant Fox ran to the front a furlong from home, and won without difficulty by a couple of lengths from Chief Cook, who got up on the inside to head Waiwene in the last stride. Azalea was a couple of lengths further back, with Convoy fifth. The winner is by Hunting Song from the Australian mare Smoke Concert, by Land of Song.

It was decided on Sunday that Nightmarch would not run in the- Great Easter, and the announcement did not greatly surprise many who had watched his work. This withdrawal left two cracks who had lost form —Limerick and Silver Paper—at the top of the handicap. The Stewards’ Handicap winner. Autopay, was always totalisator favourite with 2297 tickets. The others in demand were Arrow Lad 1820, Charmeuse 1514, Great Star 1273, and Chrysology 1052. Charmeuse, who was full of vim, took charge of her rider during the parade, and did an unauthorised preliminary the reverse way. Great Star, Autopay, Palermo and Blue Paper led out, and at the end of two furlongs Blue Paper took charge from Great Star, Arrow Lad, Chrysology and Autopay. This lot were in front at the top, with Mount Boa making up ground after a slow beginning. The last two were Limerick and Full Feather. Blue Paper led to the straight from Great Star, Arrow Lad, Autopay and Chrysology, but once fairly on the road home Mount Boa challenged the leaders and Charmeuse moved up fast. Blue Paper was beaten at the distance, where it seemed that the winner would come from Mount Boa, Charmeuse and Great Star. Charmeuse assumed command half a furlong from home, and won by half a length from Great Star, who hung on gamely to defeat Mount Boa by a head. Chrysology was two lengths away, then came Palermo, Limerick, Jaloux, Autopay and Silver Paper, with Compris 'last. Charmeuse made a brilliant debut in good company. She did not begin well, and was a long way back five furlongs from home. Mount Boa’s display brought the Waimate gelding into increased favour for the Great Autumn. The Gimcrack Handicap was the first selling race run at Riccarton for nearly 20 years, and perhaps because owners were not familiar with such events the entry was a poor one. On his good showing in the Middlepark Plate, Coroner was sent out a 700 units better favourite than Wise Choice or Muff. Wise Choice and Grand Acre began well, Muff being last to leave. Grand Acre led to the straight proper from Wise Choice and Coroner. A furlong from home Coroner looked like giving trouble, but he shut up quickly, and Wise Choice, quickly cutting down Grand Acre, beat him by a couple of lengths. Muff was about three lengths away, a couple of lengths ahead of Coroner. The winner was sold for 100 guineas, one half of which went to the Club, one third to the owner of Grand Acre, and one-sixth to the owner of Muff. The buyer was Mr M. T. Corliss, of New Brighton, and Wise Choice goes into R. Ellis’s stable. Spoon 2347, Black Duke 2096, and Ball Dress 1701, commanded most support of the half-dozen runners in the Sockbum Handicap. Ball Dress, Night Effort and Spoon began best, Black Duke being steadied and Glenrowan being slow to move. After two furlongs had been traversed Spoon and Ball Dress were leading from Black Duke, but at the end of another two furlongs Glenrowan had joined Ball Dress and Spoon in the lead. The Washdyke representative, however, did not last long, and dropped back at the home turn, where Ball Dress, Spoon and Black Duke were together, and Semper Paratus was making a run. Ball Dress and Black Duke were fighting it out at the distance, then Black Duke drew away and won fairly easily by a length and a half from Ball Dress. Night Effort finished fast and beat Semper Paratus for third money. Spoon was fifth. Another small field contested the Courtenay Handicap, included in the half-dozen being The Dove, who had previously finished out of a place in the selling race, and whose prospects looked rather forlorn. A 1 Jolson and True Shaft disputed favouritism till the machine closed, the latter ultimately attaining the honour. The Dove and Bonrose were smartest away, and The Dove led A 1 Jolson and Bonrose round the far turn. At the top the order was Al Jolson, The Dove, True Shaft, Bonrose, and it was much the same racing for the straight. Once in line for the judge First Raid and Meprisant joined in, and the Orari gelding was in front a furlong from home. He held on to win by threequarters of a length from Meprisant, who beat True Shaft by a couple of lengths. Al Jolson was another two lengths away.

Commenting on the Doncaster Handicap, the “Sydney Morning Herald” says that Sir Chrystopher’s victory was

a just reward for consistency, and a triumph for the Newcastle trainer, L. Cashman, who had been studying the horse’s peculiarities for many months. Sir Chrystopher, which this year won four out of five starts, came from the last at the three furlong post, to first at the furlong post, and sustaining a long, gruelling run, won by threequarters of a length from that sterling performer, Mollison, which tried to win all the way. The time was only half a second outside Whittier’s 1924 record for the Doncaster. Sir Chrystopher was purchased as a yearling for only 80 guineas. The buyer, however, was not satisfied, and resold him to Mr H. R. Munro for 60 guineas. He has already won £6117. RIVERTON RACING CLUB. EASTER HANDICAP TO TOWN MAJOR.
